  • Hi,

For a little light relief I would suggest Mr BadExample's cooking index. Its hilarious, but shows some basics like cauliflower cheese and a stew.

  • Hiya,

Search for any threads started by mrbadexample. These are a really good place to start as they really are step-by-step for beginners.

  • would highly recommend this book

what would you like to be able to cook? I'm sure most people on here have some simple recipes they can explain

For instance I do a creamy pasta sauce which is really easy
Cook pasta - follow instructions on side of bag (I like penne but you can use whatever), Drain pasta
then heat up a pan, and put in some chopped up bacon or pancetta (I use pancetta ready chopped as I'm lazy!)
when the bacon is crispy, stir in a few tablespoons of creme fraiche (from the cream section in supermarket) and some grated cheese. Keep stirring, and add a bit more creme fraiche if you need to until you get a creamy sauce
    Pour over pasta and eat!

You can add all sorts of things to this like mushrooms, garlic... or leave out the cheese and just do mushrooms for a creamy sauce

Don't be afraid to ask questions of anyone - I still ring my Mum and ask daft questions all the time, but it means I can cook ok for myself. I'd have a think of a list of things you want to know, or things you want to cook, and post back on here

Another good one is "Real Fast Food" by Nigel Slater. That too has most of its recipes serve only one person, which sounds like what you are after if you'll be cooking while he's away![/QUOTE]

I live on my own and find this one very handy - the recipes say one thing, then say why not try... which is fab as you find things you would not have normally tried. Got my copy free with a magazine a couple of years ago - turned out to be a fab freebie!!

At least the fish fingers are still frozen, that's what I keep telling myself (Truly Madly Deeply)

  • Thanks everyone,

Forgot to mention I'm overseas, so my local library doesn't carry a lot of UK authors. They did have Jamie's MoF book and Mary Berry though so I have requested them. If I'm successful with them I'll order Delia from amazon.

    Studentcook site looks useful too.

Should I be starting by finding recipes I like and having a go at them, or by buying stuff specifically to learn techniques before attempting to make a dish?

I'd start by thinking what you want to eat - have a look at recipes etc, or what do you like eating at a friends house, or if you eat out?
