Water softener for new washingmachine?

Just got my new machine and want to make sure it lasts. Our water is very hard and I'm wondering what I can use to keep the machine running well. Would white vinegar be a good thing in the place of fabric conditioner? Would it prevent build-up in the machine itself? I use the cheapest washing powder in small quantities and no fabric conditioner. Suggestions?
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

Hi wigginsmum,
I live in a hard water area and my washing machine is 23 years old and has coped with three babies, but I've done nothing special with italthough since joining OS I have been using vinegar as a fabric conditioner.
I thought these older threads might interest you:

Hello, Our machine has got to be 12 years old, Used to use Aerial, stopped using fabric softener years ago as I thought it was a waste of money then and certainly do now.
Started using vinegar about three weeks ago and soap nut.
Machine works just the same as it always has done.0
