Luggage carrier that attaches to towbar?

I've seen dog carriers that attach to the towbar and just hang there (i.e. no wheels).

DAK if you can get similar to carry luggage?
Made to spec?
How do they stay stable?

Am I off my head?

    Hi Les

Poor pooch would be totally traumatised in one. I've never seen such a contraption.... RSPCA may not approve I suspect... I have however seen bicycles stowed on the rear of cars in this manner. Should imagine a gander at Halfords' website might be useful. If I knew how to insert links I could put one in here to what might be the most useful info.... however, being useless I can't.... the website is https://www.halfords.com, click on "our products browse" then scroll down to "load carrying". If there is such a thing as a dog carrier that somehow attaches onto the rear end I should imagine it will be in there somewhere.

Sorry for wittering on so much about Halfords, I don't work for them honest!

Let us know how you resolve this not so unpleasant dilemma...Florida for winter sun..I am very jealous now...

I was thinking of something like this:
    http://www.autoboxeuropa.com/
    - but this company isn't in the UK yet.

I think I got the idea from the carpark at a dog show.

I think main problem might be weight (box + luggage).

  • Hi Les if it's just a couple of suitcases from the airport why not use a bicycle rack that attaches to your back hatch. they're only about £30 new and come with sufficient strapping to secure upto 3 bikes and you don't have the worry of someone stealing it or breaking into it while your away.
You can get them almost anywhere Halfords, Argos, Index.....

Hope this helps. Have a great holiday.
  • hi les

looking @ the towbar thing id say ur prob is going to one of cost again, as i dont expect theyd be cheap.
llike has been said i think ur cheapest/best option is gona be the humble roof rack .... leave it in ur boot while ur away stick it on when u get back secure cases and adios dublin!!
i think there are a few places where you can even hire them out if that suits youo any better .... although roof bars do come in handy so if the difference isnt to much u could prob just buy them

  • I've seen ones that just look homemade: a welded steel frame with wood or aluminium sheet panels. You would need to be careful if it's heavy, with a big dog or a light car. That's a lot of weight well behind the rear wheels and could upset the car's handling.
If you are going to put a dog in there, think about the position of the air vents.
Air (and dirt) at the back of a car tends to gets sucked along behind the car, especially steep hatchbacks, estates and vans. (Look at how dirty they get at the back). That means the exhaust gas stays there too and gets sucked into the dog box. I don't claim to be an expert in aerodynamics, but if you've ever driven with the hatch open you'll know what I mean about the fumes.

Strong nylon rope tied to the wife's belt & then attached to the tow-bar should do the trick.
p.s. Don't forget to lash the suitcases to her wrists just in case she gets tired holding them all the way to the south of France !!!

my missus better not see this
What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about !!!

Don't like this idea - what sort of shape will she be in for cooking & ironing when I get her home?

I've gone off the idea, the cost and concern about the weight on the towbar being the main reasons.

    Thanks all
