Hi - I understand exactly where your family is coming from. My MIL went into a home recently and the only thing on her mind was money. She has money but not a lot but is of the generation who want to hang onto every last penny.

Once she went into the home she suddenly realised that it was worth paying for as she now has her own room (was sharing in hospital), lots of privacy if she wants it, 24/7 nursing care when she needs it and company from others as well. Before she moved in she viewed it as god's waiting room but has found that the other residents regularly go out, are very friendly and she is very well looked after - money no longer has any significance.

Originally she was thinking about the inheritance for her family, but is now coming to terms with not leaving as much and the fact that we are all in our forties and well capable of looking after ourselves and it is her turn to have some care and attention.

Good luck - don't let your family fret about money - at the end of the day it's them that matter not the money.

My mother was recently moved into residential care for which she has to pay when her hospital bed was required by a new patient. So keen were Social Services to move her on that the Care Home were taken by suprise when she was delivered to their door. Costs there range from 350 to 650 p.w. And she is a 2 hour drive away from me.

In true moneysaving spirit, I searched for cheaper options with the same or better quality of care.

Literally on my own doorstep, I discovered the Shaftsbury Housing Asociation (Care Services Division) which provide, among other things........
"quality affordable homes for people whose needs cannot be met in the commercial housing market". They are a professional Christian organisation, managing almost 10,000 homes across the country, following the ethos of the victorian social reformer the 7th Earl of Shaftsbury."(quote from their literature)
I spoke to residents there who had sold their homes privately, hence its not aimed just at people on state benefits. Also according to residents they don't push the religion line these days.
My mum could have a 1 bed flat there with shared garden with 24/7 access to care and a full time resident social worker for the rent of 92 pounds a week which includes all her gas and electricity bills. They encourage independent living but staff do call in on residents daily And I live in a pricey part of the south-east!!
Now thats what I call moneysaving for seniors! My apartment is booked!!
