Another thought - if the fabric is 'really' stretchy, i.e. if it has lycra in it (like swimming costume fabric), sometimes a stretch needle, rather than a ballpoint one, will work better. Not sure how easy they are to get over here though, I tend to buy in bulk from the US, but it's possible that a reasonable haberdashery department will stock them.
Failing that, you could try the tissue paper under the foot trick which gives the foot something less slippy to grip (some people use loo roll which is probably more OS) or at a pinch, try spray starching the fabric if it's washable.
Using a zigzag should definitely help though, it stops stitches breaking when the fabric is stretched in wear. On my machine I can alter the straight stitch setting to just be a tiny zigzag (.5 mm) which looks virtually straight when sewn but just has that bit of 'give'.
