Is there much temp work about - scared!

Im about to return to England after living abroad.
I keep reading about how bad the recession is, and that there is very little work about. I have accepted that I wont have much chance of permanent work in my chosen field.
But now I'm worried I wont get temp office work either. Ill either be in London or Southampton. Ill be living with friends so will need income pronto!
I have a few years of admin work. Now getting scared! Just wanted to hear from anyone in the know if there is much about or if companies aren't bothering with temps to save some money.

There's loads of work. You just need to put in the effort to go and get it.
Tell me what field you're in and I'm quite sure a quick google search will find plenty of vacancies.
No doubt though, people will be moaning "Oh but it's jobs that don't exist put up by agencies" and other crap like that. It soon becomes quite obvious why lots of people don't have jobs.0 -
Oh, that's good to know! I have been working as a Public Relations Officer for the last year and a half, but from looking on reed all the jobs in this area have heaps of applicants.
So any kind of admin work would suit me fine. I would be happy to work as a receptionist, do data entry or a more general admin assistant.
I have done temp work before (abroad) and each time registered with lots of agencies, and each time found work quickly. It was the same two agencies that always found me work, so I guess that each agency specialises in a slightly different area. Its just a question of finding the agency that you match with.
Thanks again!0 -
my only feedback would be that the wages have dropped quite a bit
suppy and demany and IT is business
lots of work in London but not at the money you would be expecting, and factor in travel costs
have a look at Reed website and search for jobs to give you an idea0 -
I know I wont be earning anything like I have been. At least there is still the minimum wage. I wonder how I will feel in a few months.0

Wow, what planet are you living on?!
"According to the ONS, there 434,000 job vacancies in the UK.
The REAL unemployment rate - that is, those of working age who are unemployed and depend on benefits to survive - is about 5.6 million.
So as it stands now, there aren't enough jobs for even 10% of the unemployed."
You, sir, are a cosseted, foolish buffoon who has no understanding of this issue. There is a huge over supply of labour in the UK caused by structural and technology changes to the economy. Add the Lefts social dumping/immigration policy which has added at least 2 million to the work force.0 -

Thanks, you've just backed up my point.
I said there are loads of jobs in the UK. There are currently 434,000. That's loads. And guess which people are going to get them? Probably people like the OP who have the right positive attitude towards finding work.
Guess who won't be filling those jobs? The people who don't put in the effort to get them, and would rather sit around at home moaning how crap everything is.0 -

Exactly - if there are 5 million unemployed - there should be NO jobs available!
My lazy ex lodger has applied for 5 jobs in 12 months and wonders why he hasn't got a job - stick these f*ckers on the front line in the middle east!0 -
I live in a town not too far from southampton. Trust me, it's so so difficult to get a job here. There are jobs, but soooooooo many people applying for each one. And employers can be so picky and pay !!!! wages.0

I have 2 jobs, !!!!!! retail jobs I started 7 years ago and worked during college and uni. I finished uni over a year ago and still work in both of them. About 6 months ago I went from doing 30 hours + down to my contract hours of 4 in one job and 6 down to 3 in the other. Head office made cut backs and wanted more members of staff in our store. I was alright doing up to 40 hours per week in both jobs combined, but am struggling now on minimal hours.
Been for a few other jobs that look good but 'don't have right experience,' 'need more experience in admin,' 'not enough experience.' See a pattern? Employers can be so so picky. I did what they advised at school, went to uni, got a degree, but I didn't live a student lifestyle, I worked full time almost in2 jobs and lived at home. Now am struggling to find another job and pay rent and bills.0 -
Only an idiot would argue that there being available jobs for less than 10% of the unemployed equates to “loads of jobs”. I have seen the IT industry wiped out by intra-company transfers and off-shoring, with people (especially if they are over 40) thrown on to the scrap heap – but, hey it doesn’t matter there “are loads of jobs!” This disgraceful vilification of decent people needs to be stopped.speedbird1973 wrote: »Exactly - if there are 5 million unemployed - there should be NO jobs available!
There is always a degree of churning within the labour market, as people get the sac, resign, retire ,new jobs created. Jobs can’t be filled immediately meaning there are always vacancies at any given time. Are you too dumb to work this out for yourself?
People like you need to be standing in a dole queue and have a real taste of what it’s like to live in Browns Britain. With no-nothing space cadets like you running the country no wonder emigration rates are so high. God help us.0
