Back to university... tax on a laptop

in Cutting tax
Hi guys,
Firstly, I really need a great website which tells you all about tax. Any ideas...?
Ok the main bulk of the question. I am currently working, earning a healthy salary but will be going back to university to do a phd (not in tax), which I am going to buy a new laptop. I was told today by a friend, that the laptop is tax deductable? Does this mean I can buy a laptop, and then get 22% of the money back from the government? How would I do it if I could?
To complicate it even more, I would possibly get it from USA as they are cheaper, good exchange rates etc... Would this also be tax free? Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree but would like to know.
I know I can claim tax back once I have finished working and started study (which i will do) just in case someone mentions it.
Thanks

I dont know what your friend is referring to but Ive never heard of it.
as a PhD student you are presumably going to be receiving a stipend which is tax free anyway, so you are not paying any tax to deduct from.0
