Incorrect, You are entitled to UNPAID leave to deal with an emergency with your young child (ie Nursery closed due to snow), your company can't force you to take the time of as a holiday - taking as holiday can only be done if both employee and employer agree.

Read the DTI guide I posted earlier in this thread, it's all covered in the 1996 Employment Act

    Wrong.
As an employer, if you give twice the notice of the amount of annual leave you require someone to have (ie. 2 days notice to take 1 day off), this is well within employment law.

    Please get your facts right.

Correct but somewhat at cross purposes with the post that you quote.

The situation that lead to this question was time off due to school being unexpectedly closed due to snow.

The parent is entitled to SHORT periods of unpaid leave to deal with family situations such as this. However, this would normally be just long enough to make some arrangements, not for however long the school was shut!

In this situation it is difficult to do as you suggest. OK, you could give two days notice on Monday to take Thursday off (Wed would be less than two days away by the time you issue notice). However on Monday you couldn't order them to take Thursday and Friday off as this would need four days notice!

    Not that easy.......
