Need dental treatment but no money!

Hi Im wondering if anyone can help at all

My partner has suffered from pain in one of his molars for a couple of months now! We were told it would probably cost about £45 to get it sorted but try as we might we have never had this spare :(

OH has been suffering in silence (sort of lol) and I promised him when I get paid he will hav it sorted, but he is in alot of pain now, painkillers arnt touching it anymore, and I wont get paid for another 2 weeks! And that is if we even can afford it as it seems that everytime we think we have the money something comes up and takes it all!!

I work full time and am pregnant so I get treatment for free, OH is a stay at home dad to our 2 children atm and doesnt claim any benefits so isnt intitled to free treatment.

Ive already asked dentist if they would treat him now and I can pay them later by some means but they have said no (long shot but doesnt hurt to ask)

Just wish they could treat him and say it was me they were treating! I know thats wrong but its typical that I get free dental and I dont need it (never needed more than a clean in my life!) whereas he needs it and has to pay :( We used to be with HSA but even that was a waste of time cause you need the money to start with and thats where we are having problems!

Just hate seeing him in pain and dont know what to do

xx

  • Hello - Well £45 not the end of the world! (before you jump I live on benefits) - you need to cut something out/back? Poor chap being in pain for want of that - come on! Get his tooth sorted then get over to the oldstyle section of the board, and make some changes to housekeeping. Sorry I know it sounds harsh but for heavens sake have you ever had tooth ache?

You don't say where you live, but my local hospital (King's, in London) has a dental clinic which operates as a training centre and offers free treatment. Is there a hospital anywhere within reach of you that has a similar training facility?

Is there any way you could borrow the money (either from a family member, or by putting other things on a credit card to free it up) then pay it off at a few pounds a month? If I or a close family member was in pain, that would be my second-highest priority financially after paying my rent.

Have you got an odd bit of gold jewellery you can sell as scrap?

The price of gold is very high atm and I've used this company recently to sell some broken bits and few odd unwanted bits, very successfully. You would likely recoup £45 from a man's ring or ladies bracelet or chain, depends on weight.

They deal by post and will pay out by bank transfer or cheque.I posted one day and had cleared funds in my bank account the next day.

It is absurd to continue to suffer from toothache in this day and age.

How much better off would you be if the pain became an uncontrolled infection that caused swelling that cut off the airway, and he died?

It's £45 quid. It's health, It's a priority, not something you can do if you 'have a bit spare'.

    Get it sorted - now.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

    Hi OP

I've got a few suggestions for you to try and help. We don't know your specific circumstances but:
    • Try your local Emergency Dental Service. You can get the number from NHS Direct (0845 4647). They will normally get him out of pain/extract that day and the fee is usually around £16
    • get an HC1 from the post office. With no income and not on benefits he should qualify for free dental treatment.
    Hope this helps

Well before anyone else jumps on me it isnt me who is putting other things first!! I have been putting money aside ever since he started complaining and he has been booked in 3 times for appointments, but when the day comes he cancels cause something else came up and he 'had' to use the money! Then we get days like today where he is almost in tears with the pain and Im stuck not knowing what to do when truth is its him who is being some sort of martyr! I know he is just putting us before himself as usual but sometimes you just need to look out for yourself!

Those who made suggestions thank you its much appreciated :o Unfortunatly Ive tried borrowing in the past but as it was xmas etc no one was able to lend, though I will ask again. I dont have a credit card and I sold what little gold I had a while back.

Ive looked up the HC1 form and it looks as though he can get help via that, though it doesnt say it can b picked up from post office? It does say you might me able to get a copy from GP or dentist office though so I will try them :o

I know we dont have a dental hospital nearby but i will check with local hospital as I know they are a training hospital(?) so they may offer something

    Thanks again

    x

  • If you see an emergency dentist for pain relief, you will have to pay £16.50. Your PCT will have these clinics running and would be able to tell you. If you go to an NHS dentist for a check up and treatment, you can get an awful lot of treatment for about £45 (can't remember the charge exactly). It makes more sense for you to try and find the longer term dentist as you will get permanent treatment rather than a temporary outcome from the pain clinic.

I work in a pain clinic (some Sundays and Friday afternoons) and we don't even have permanent materials let alone the time to use them.

    Hope you get it sorted.

To be honest if you've made and he's cancelled three appointments do you think he might be frightened and is using money problems as an excuse. When was the last time he saw a dentist?

You might want to chat this over with him before making another appointment and seek out a sympathetic dentist.
