Anyone have any experience of getting a mortgage with not so great credit?

Long story involving me moving jobs to a different area whilst pregnant and not selling my house... along with a diaabled partner who refuses to claim any kind of benefit
Its been a hard few years, but I *think* I have finally sold my house (very cheaply)
So now I want to buy the house I currently rent from my father in law.
I have two defaults on my credit file (bank account I mis managed and a store card that I didnt get the letters for until too late) I also was 3 months behind on my mortgage as I changed bank accounts and they didnt send me letters until it went bad... I stupidly didn't realise.
So all in all, I am now almost up to date with everyone (I owe one credit card payment which will be made in a few days time)
However I have just come to the realisation that I may not be able to secure a new mortgage. I have already talked to the company I have one with already, but they said no purely down to the default on my bank account.
I have a really good wage, but dont know who it is best to talk to about mortgages, or indeed if anyone will give me a mortgage.
Any advice or glimmers of light will be appreciated. Three years ago before it all went wrong I had a perfect record

Hello!
In the first instance, you should talk to a mortgage broker, there are plenty around on these boards, and Martin has a guide about getting a mortgage, so read that if you haven't already.
A broker is in the best position to tell you who would consider you given your credit history - just remember to disclose everything you can about your financial situation and history.

I have a credit history with 2 defaults on and managed to get a mortgage with my partner (clean history) through RBS. Great rate as well.
Good luck x0 -
Thanks Guys.
I think you are right, a mortgage broker is the best bet, but I've just had more bad news... the buyers pulled out about 30 minutes ago as they COULDN'T GET A MORTGAGE!!!
I'm gutted but I'm going to get myself organised so I am ready to go next time it sells.... Only the fifth time its fallen through...0 -

I rented it out last year and it was trashed... so I'm really hoping to sell so I can get on with my life (I moved to a completely different part of the country) as I'm beginning to hate that house!0
