Hand Scrubbing Carpet - Query

Hi all, to cut a long story short, will white vinegar, or anything, at all, remove old stains?

Here's the long story ...

I live in a houseshare and since everybody was away and I found a Vax steam cleaner under the stairs I decided I would clean the corridor, my study and the front room carpets as they have lots of old stains and were generally grubby (and the front room stinks of cigarettes as the lodger who just moved out was smoking in there constantly with the windows closed *sigh*).

Anyway, I decided to do it bit by bit, so I started with the study as it's the smallest. I moved all my furniture out, swept (twice), hoovered, and then tried to get to grips with the steam machine... Only to discover it didn't work!!!! No water comes out! :rotfl:

So I hand scrubbed the carpet with the solution I had in the Vax and some rubber gloves and a scrubbing brush, and left it to dry overnight. I realised it would probably not get rid of the old stains, I was going to spot clean those with stain remover but reading through the forum heard about using white vinegar. So I've been dabbing the stains all morning with white vinegar ... Don't know whether I should continue doing this all day and then scrub the carpet again or whether I should just use the stain remover afterward. Any advice?

Certainly not going to bother with the corridors anymore! Have swept and hoovered them. That'll do.
