Healthy eating but moneysaving?

Options
I really need to lose a pile of weight as I'm off on holiday to a friends wedding at the beginning of April.
I have got LAZY over the last few weeks and need to get back on the treadmill, that's all very good of me but when it come's to healthy eating and doing it cheaply is what I'm no good at!

When I joined slimming world everything seemed to work out such a lot of money!
All the special low fat breakfast items were a rip off, salad can cost the earth if it's just me eating it and things like steamed fish and low fat dressings I'm not very fond of.

I really need to take this seriously now as I vowed I wouldn't go on holiday unless I lost some weight and toned up - stupid me has left it until it until it's nearly impossible to do it!

I guess what advice i'm asking for is how and what can I eat from morning, lunch and dinner that wont cost me the earth???

I love things like Jacket pots with tuna and beans on toast but I can't live on that can i?????

    Hi Ella,

I'm currently doing SW and trying to keep our food shopping bill down. i've found that its working out OK so far (though still early days), because I tend to cook from scratch and have things like porridge etc. I guess I'm trying to say that SW is based on basic cheap foods and might be worth another look?

    A sample menu might be:

porridge made with milk and fruit for breakfast
scrambled eggs and tomatoes on wholemeal toast for lunch
spaghetti bolognese made with lean mince and lots of veggies for dinner.

    HTH,

Sorry to hear you find slimming world so expensive - I'm finding it incredibly cheap to feed 3 adults and 2 kids on a smidge over £30 per week at the moment (I do have a storecupboard and 2 adults are only here househunting)

Menus for last week were (and I lost 3.5 lbs) were

    B Khichri and Poached eggs
    L Vegetable and lentil soup
D Thai veg curry and rice

B "Dry Roast" Potato slices and "fried eggs" and tomatoes
    L Turley and Barley Soup
D Teriyaki Salmon and Noodles with Stir-fry veg

B Bubble n Squeak with poached egg n mushrooms
L Tattie Soup (Veg and potatoes)
D Pea and Parmesan Risotto with side salad

    B Khichri and Poached eggs
L Tom Yum Noodle Soup with lentil salad
    D Tuna and Bean Salad

B Poached egg on toast with tomato and baked beans
    L Baked potato with hummus
D Pasta with tomato sauce and salad

B Fruit salad, natural yogurt, toast n beans
    L Gazpacho Soup, Veggie Frittata
D Tex-mex veggie burgers, SW Chips and green pea "guacamole"

B Indian Eggs with spicy bombay potatoes
    L Noodle Salad
    D Griddled chicken with tabouleh

Actually might try this again this week as it was all yummy and as unlike Xmas food as I could get.

    Hope this helps

Have you considered growing some of your own veg? We have had an allotment for a year now, with no previous gardening experience, and it is amazing how easy it is to grow things like salad leaves, potatoes, courgettes, garlic, chillies, squashes etc. Even if you don't have access to land, you can grow a fair number of bits and pieces on your windowsill like herbs, salad leaves, chillies, radishes etc.You just need a suitable container (we once used an old wok and pot!) and some potting soil. Bung the seeds in and read the packet for how to look after them. Simples!

The digging, hoeing, weeding etc is also good exercise if you are trying to lose weight. The only problem is finding new uses for all the excess veggies. We got quite creative with courgettes at one point...

    Read this list

Basically make all your choices off this list, buy which ever is cheaper. Do not buy the low fat breakfast cereal, they are just rammed with sugar instead which is "low fat". Look at veg rather than those salad bags, salads of cucumber, celery that you make yourself are much cheaper, especially from a greengrocer.

Look also into spices, they can completely changed the flavour of a meal with 0kcals.
