Ladders Recruitment on TV. What a rip off!!!

Having been out of work for a while from the technology side of the world I decided to give these people a go and was rather horrified to discover that

1) your CV has to be approved by them.( I don't have a problem with that ) but it's unusual.

2) You can't apply for a position unless you pay them !!!

How this has got past the advertising standards is beyond me but it certainly need to be pull from TV advertising or they should at least warn people.

There's a million websites out there for recruitment yet the advertising almost proclaims these people have job that no one else does. They're not employers is just a very basic recruitment company with the added twist that YOU PAY THEM for the privilege of applying for jobs with no guarantee ( if those jobs even exist !! )

Anyway rather than leaving it it there I've found plenty of other complains from people on the internet that have used this company's CV service
and received no service or a very bad one.... again with no guarantee that what they do to your CV for £000+ ( no that's not a type ) or in one persons case $654 is a guarantee.

If they were so sure of them selves they'd get the money from you after you'd gain employment.

I agree, my CV was approved by them and I was sent details of roles, but when I went to view them, I had to 'upgrade my membership' which of course means pay money. I decided not to bother. There are plenty of Executive Agencies who will do it all for nothing on the basis that they get paid when they place you.
Life is too short to drink bad wine!
  • I'd like to know how they can advertise on TV without declaring that there's a fee involved.

I thought it was illegal for Employment Agencies to charge a fee to potential employees?
Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam
  • I'm sure it is, but I bet they can get away with it by saying the fee is for something else.
The more I type into Google "Ladders ripoff " the more articles I see by the day about them.
The jobs on there are nothing special, and Ladders need to be reminded they are not the employer, but are acting as an agencies and therefore cannot guarantee employment even after a fee has been paid.

I'm puzzled as to why there ads are still on TV.

This is scandalous, I wouldn't mind betting that the people who set up these agencies, also run organisations which promise to sell your car for you, by putting you in touch with potential buyers for £70 a time.
It seems like everyone wants to prey on the poor, weak and desperate.
  • It is illegal for agencies to do this - the Government also changed the law for modeling agencies too. The Government is pathetic and very slow to pick up on these scams. This means in a couple of years Ladders will start getting problems although they will simply start up another agency under a different name doing the same thing.
  • In the UK it is illegal to charge job seekers to search a job board or apply for jobs, so how come TheLadders.co.uk appears to be charging jobseekers £10 per month to view/apply vacancies on their site?

Well I'll let you in to some inside info... : O

TheLadders.co.uk uses a "pay wall" (£10 per month ouch) blocking any poor unsuspecting new user to their UK site being able to view/apply for £50K + jobs, this is simply a smoke screen. If you register on TheLadders.co.uk and go to your "account" page then go to "settings" you'll see a little tick box (which has been hidden away on purpose) that reads "allow me to apply for jobs for free" tick this box and hey presto you get FREE access to TheLadders.co.uk... I'm not sure that the 1000's of unfortunate job seekers in the UK will not be too happy when they find out they have been paying £10 per month for a service they could have gotten for free!!! Now Theladders.co.uk know it's illegal to charge job seekers to search and apply, but they get around this by making it less than obvious that you can gain access for free.

TheLadders.co.uk say that that for your £10 joining fee you'll get a free CV critique, but not surprisingly if you tick the "allow me to apply for jobs button" your free CV critique is not avaiable..!! ? hmmm..

The Ladders.co.uk use non trained and non professional CV critique staff in the UK (in fact they are not even employed by TheLadders they are freelancers and in some cases Theladders have not even met them), they get paid about £125 per CV, whereas TheLadders charge you around £400, although this price might vary..I mean a CV is a CV right (resume to folks in the US) wrong... The more you earn...The more they will charge you as they feel that you can afford to pay more..

It's about time that TheLadders.co.uk came clean and dropped their pay wall. If they did this they'd and got their CV writing on track they have a good site, until then it's a cloak and daggers offering..
  • i paid in August by Visa for premium membership but have not been able to get access to any jobs since. They have confirmed by email that they have processed the payment so they have my money but when i try to login to look at jobs up pops a little window asking me to upgrade to premium membership what a load of rubbish.
  • I have joined GMLadders and have not paid a penny. When you see a job and click on title for more details you will go to a page asking for payment or upgrade. Go to the bottom of that page and there is a blue font 'No Thanks' Click on that to view details and apply.

I have applied for a number of 'vacancies' and with detective work located the company. Having spoke to the staff at the client company I have been told that the vacancy does not exist and that they have never spoken to GM Ladders.

My experience is ' They are a waste of effort' GM ladders should be investigated by trading standards.:(
