However, nobody forces anyone to become a teacher, everyone who enters the profession knows all the pluses and minuses of the career. If anyone goes into it and is then shocked, disappointed or surprised then they really are not very bright people and maybe another career is worth thinking about.;)

EXACTLY!!! Everyone knows teachers get snow days and get paid. It's a plus of the career. So if anyone is shocked or surprised or annoyed that teachers have days off when it snows becasue schools have been advised to close then they are not very bright people.
Thank you Pennylane for pointing that out.
  • It's really nice to see some sensible people on here. I never thought of getting easy money by suing my child's school because they're being deprived of an education!

Sod everyone else when the school can't develop the overall school experience for the students (such as after school clubs, dramatic productions, running school trips etc.) because I've had a nice fat juicy payout!

how long does it really take to plan a lesson. for example say you are a history teacher. in the syllabus there maybe things listed that have to be taught like the american civil war or the roman empire. so you look at the syllabus and think ok i will teach them about the romans this week. so in a few seconds one lesson is planned. if it really takes so much longer, i am wondering if teachers make it more complicated than it needs to be. even the most intelligent people can be stupid in certain situations with certain things.

Ahhh you really have no idea. If only!

the problem is even if people can accept that it is perk of the job there is still the knowledge that some teachers fake being snowed in to get out of going in. ultimately people can be corrupt and if in any job(not just teaching) you have situation that the workers can take advantage of then some will.

well yeah i dont have any idea in that i am not a teacher. so if a teacher was going to teach about the romans what else would they need to do to prepare for it. surely they already have the knowledge from when they were doing their degree. so its not like they need to do research on the romans.
can you not understand why these kind of questions arise? i am yet to see anyone explain clearly how it takes so long to plan a lesson.

i am not suggesting people do that. it is an obvious question that comes to mind thats all. if there are parents who would sue the school if their kid slipped on some ice then why wouldnt there be parents that would sue the school for closing.

I'm a primary teacher so I would have to research what I needed to know. I would then have to find lesson objectives that meet National curriculum standards for my age group. Then, think of progression activities so the children build up knowledge in small an bearable chunks. I would have to differentiate each activity to accomodate for the different literacy abilities. I have activities now but have to think of a starter an plenary, questions to ask to stretch learners and assessment opps. This is the easy part, it's the typing up that takes a long time an remember this is done once a week in every subject, literacy and maths are everyday. One I have planed I have to make resources, mark the work once the plan has been carred out and fill in my assessment.

We get moved around every year so have to make new plans. I'm not saying it's hard, just time consuming.

I totally agree with this! But if the school is closed there is nothing teachers can do.
