Credit Rating

Hi everyone,
My wife and I have a good credit rating, always pay off the credit card every month, never miis paying a bill etc. Never had any problem getting any credit. My wife tried to open a storecard at a shop yesterday to get the discount but was rejected when they rang the credit company. We moved into a new house last year buying it off a family member with good credit rating too. Not long after we moved in we started having letters from a bank we don't bank with. It seems as though someone had opened an online account using my address and we were receiving notices of insufficient funds to pay direct debits. I contacted the bank and wrote to them and received a letter assuring me the matter had been delt with and my credit rating wasn't affected, they said that credit rating is based on the person not the house. This is the first time we have gone for credit since this incident. Does anyone have any ideas? Can we find out why we were refused credit?Do I have to get back in touch with the bank?
Thanks
