Help us eat well and get back to healthy!!

Hi All

Well as the title suggests I need some help with cooking healthy food, not necessarily to loose weight (though that would be a bonus!) but to get DH as fit and healthy as we can be.

I will give you a brief insight, I have a condition which means I need to take medication to suppress my immune system, basically meaning I seem to pick up every cough, cold and bug going! At the moment I have a chest and throat infection and the cold. Poor DH has had the cold since before christmas and while I know these things will happen I want to make sure we are as healthy as possible so we have the best chances of fighting these things off. When thinking about our lifestyles I realised that we probably do eat quite a lot of convenience foods and probably a few too many take aways a month! There is just me (25) and DH at home, of and our pampered pooch Muttley! We both work full time, though we start early and are usually home by 4pm which should leave plenty of time for me to make something healthy!!

My problem is that I really dont know where to start when it comes to 'healthy' food. Not a great fan of fish, infact, tinned tuna and fish fingers is as far as it goes, Im also not the most experienced of cooks but I will try just about anything providing I have a recipie to follow!

I guess what I am asking is if anyone could point me in the right direction with some breakfast (which we dont eat at the minute), lunch and dinner suggestions.

Thanks
Linz xox
Its hard to wait around for that something you know may never happen, but its harder to give up when you know its everything you ever wanted.........

People tell me Im going the wrong way..............when its simply a way of my own!

I find stews/caseroles etc a good source of easy nutrition. Lots of vegies/pulses can be chucked in, and it's lovely and warming for the winter. For soup, do the same, just blitz it at the end.
I'm sorry, I can't help with recipes as such. I'm not a recipe follower (other than when baking). I just decide to make something, have an idea how I want it to turn out, and chuck in whatever I feel will work/is appropriate.

However, something that won't necessarily help you to cook, but will give you some basics on nutrition is this website. She has lots of videos about nutrition on there, and they're definitely worth a view if you get the time :)

Edited to add - if you go to the video section titled 'nutrition basics' and start with the first video. That's probably the best section to start with.

Well if you want to boost your OH's immune system then fruit and veg would be the start.

A good multivit and the ofcourse the ubiquitous vit D that is in vogue atm ( whilst sceptical I am giving it a go after a lingering bug since before Xmas too)

If your OH has mucous avoid dairy products for a bit. Base your meals around the eatwell plate and pick lower fat options. http://www.nutrition.org.uk/healthyliving

With recipes it is a case of where do you start - there are loads. Perhaps a visit to the library for a healthy eating cookbook like eat for health or 101 healthy eats.
