Our Day

Ok as promised here is what happened today. I know a few days ago I was reading everyones court day posts trying to work out what would happen to us (I was so frightened) so hopefully this might help someone else who is about to go through it.
We arrived at the county court an hour before 9.45 which was our appointment time (we both opted for smart casual)
We had to go through a security thingy like at the airport where and very cheerful security gaurd directed us to the right place, it felt very weird saying we were there for bankruptsy. He didn't look down his nose at us or anything.
Then we went up to the desk and explained we were there to file for bankrupty and were asked to take a seat. Another man was swearing his affadavit for his bankruptsy so we were next in line. He looked scared like we did and he was on his own. I was so glad to be going through it with my husband.
Then we got called up to the desk together and a nice non judgemental man checked both of our forms (we had to do only a few corrections) and swear our oath and pay our fee etc and then we took another seat and waited for them to prepare our case notes to take to the court usher.
I was starting to panic more now as I realised we would be going to see the judge, some people don't have to. I suppose it depends on which court you are at and how busy they are.
Then we went and sat in the court waiting room. This I found very hard as there were very unhappy couples divorcing everywhere. I felt so lucky to be there holding my husbands hand.
Then the judge read our names (together thankfully) over the speaker and asked us to go to court number 2. Which wasn't anything like a court at all, no big white wigs or wooden hammers. More like a nice big posh office.
The moment we walked in I felt at ease. The Judge was so warm and lovely and just asked us if we had seeked advice and then briefly explained the official receiver and said... now relax....from now on we can ignore the phonecalls and letters and look forward to the future. He joked about the O/R not being interested in our old bangers and said we had a very straightforward case and we shouldn't worry. He said the only thing he ever hears in regret from people declaring themselves is that they didn't do it sooner. He was so sweet and reassuring I could have hugged him and I think my husband could have as well.
We then had to take our paperwork to the official reciever who is a small walk away in a huge office building. We just handed in our forms and another folder of bank statements, payslips and destroyed cards that we had put together earlier. The receptionist said that the receiver would call us in 8-10 days. And that was it!
We've been living in a nightmare financially for as long as I can remember, thankfully we have a very strong relationship and have managed to hide our traumas from our little boy. Its been so hard leading up to today. Anyone who thinks bankruptsy is an easy option is wrong. Today though was hopefully the end to our nightmares. Maybe I will get a full nights sleep now, or maybe not as i'm due to have a baby in 3 weeks. We can at last start to concentrate on that...I can't wait :rotfl:

So glad the day went smoothly for you and thankyou for sharing your experience, it really does help others waiting for their court day. I was more nervous about the court than anything else but like you too found it all very straight forward and was treated kindly.
Enjoy a good nights sleep if baby allows!!

Me too!! I get so emotional & like most others I was left wondering why I didn't go through with it sooner. Could've had it all wrapped up by now, discharged and all but hey... glad I've done it now & nearly 1 month down so only 11 to go :T
