Getting rid of sooty smell

Options
I have one of those multi fuel stove things in my living room, you can burn pretty much anything in it. Anyway, its only used during the winter as the heat from it is really intense, but during the summer I always get a sort of sooty smell in the room, even though the stove has been cleaned out on the inside and the doors are kept shut.

Any ideas for getting rid of the sooty smell ? Obviously I throw open the windows when I can. Will getting the chimney swept get rid of this smell ?

Sounds to me as if you have a damp flue - heavy rain or just passage of time will bring soot down the chimney. Our Rayburn stinks and we get loads of black goo if we dont sweep the chimney soon after it is let out for the summer. Its usually a b*tch to get going again too. Record is three attepts in a force 8 gale. You would have thought there would be sufficinet draught with that lot going on. Will try tip OP has given - nothing ventured....

suddenly it all falls into place - the smell was at its worse at the weekend after three day of heavy rain and very strong winds. Looks like the chimney definitely needs swept then, to be honest its a long time since its been done. I'm going to give that other tip a go as well for good measure.

    thanks
