Advice please from someone who uses Kettle bells?

I have read in a couple of magazines that they are really good for training and read some celebs swear by kettle bell training.

I looked in my local area for a kettle bell training class but no luck however I have seen Reebok do ladies kettle bells 5kg one is £16.00.

Is this easy to do at home alone if i get tips/videos from the internet to follow? also would I be ok doing just the kettlebell exercises for say 1 hour a day and nothing else or would I need to do other exercises to see a difference? thanks.

That article say 2 or 3 times a week 20/30 minutes gosh it must be good:D

It says its a difficult workout so I hope Its possible to do it yourself if you find videos online and follow as no where does classes.

Some gyms offer small classes in this but the best bet if you want to learn with some good guidance is to get a Personal Trainer qualified to teach them. It can be expensive doing this mind but sometimes buying all the eqiupment can work out quite expensive too.

If you buy the dvds and kettle bells then after a certain amount of sessions using the one weight you will plateau and need to up your workout either by upping the weight or more reps etc.

One site I know of that offers a bit of info is the kettleworx.com website.

hubby trains with these but he does strongman so probably uses them for a different result to you! He found lots of excercises for these online i think and also on sky there is a la fitness style channel that shows workouts with these.

    Hello everyone,

I thought I would 'bump' up this thread, as I am looking into purchasing a kettlebells.

So if you have any opinions on them it would be gratefully recieved.

    Thanks

    Susanna
  • I've done a little bit of kettleballs but I didn't like them - I prefer using handweights or bar weights to tone with. I'd also suggest seeing a personal trainer as I found the abs moves hard to do and felt more confident with my PT showing me what to do. Without her I would have done the abs exercises incorrectly and probably damaged my lower back. Also, you may need to buy more than one bell as I was using a 10kg bell for abs but a smaller 5kg bell for arms and lats. So yeah, start off with a couple of lessons or PT sessions then if you like it and you've got the confidence you can do the moves correctly you could buy your own bells and do your routine at home.
  • Also, to the OP who suggested doing kettlebells for an hour a day, you're a braver woman than I!!! They are weights so they are for toning type exercises; you'd probably need 20min max to do your toning and I'd suggest using the other 40min to do cardio such as running, step, exercise dvd etc as you need to balance cardio (for weight loss) and toning to improve muscle tone - no point in having wonderfully toned muscles if they're hiding under the wobbly bits!
(OP - obviously I don't know if you've got wobbly bits or not so pls don't be offended if you are already lovely and svelte!)

sparkleisshoppong is dead right. Used incorrectly kettlebells can seriously rip muscles and do damage, due to the, often 'swinging' nature of the moves. Yes they are very effective but there is no way 1 hour is a good idea! Use them in a gym, with a trainer or after training, with other things for a total body workout.

There are lots of good teaching vids on YouTube which will give you some idea of what its like to train with kettlebells.
