  • I recommend the Co-Op Cashminder account - go into a branch with some ID (passport etc., take proof of address etc.) - I had the account set up with internet, Visa Debit card (no cheque book - but hey - its 2010) - in less than 10 days.

If you change banks you will have to cancel all the direct debits and start again. Set up standing orders instead for every 4 weeks and you'll hopefully find it a bit easier and have no bank charges. A failed standing order usually costs nothing where a failed direct debit will cost what £30 each?

Find out what the gas/electric/water/council taxes/anything cost you for 2009 then divide it by 13 and round it up to the next pound to work out how much you should be paying. Much better to be in control rather than let them take what they want. You'll lose discounts but really what are they 3% of £1000 is £30...the cost of 1 failed direct debit.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

My mortgage is due on the last day of the month so this was due on 31st dec and I get paid on 15th jan. I've never looked at it like that before, i mean the difference between monthly pay and 4 weekly. My problem is getting sorted in the now. I will definately try and open a new account as some of you have said and then that way if I budget myself properly it should work. My only worry is all the debt in the meantime. I am currently filling in an online form for CCCS which has been suggested on here but it takes time and for some reason has decided to put it's own amounts in the tables rather than mine so I will go back to it later.
I know my debts are trivial to others but to me they are a real worry and I want them sorted before I have people knocking on my door. I am very grateful to everyone who has replied to me and will be taking some of the advice given.
