Nail advice please!

  • Hi, I tried gel overlays in the run up to my wedding and they were useless, I am not hard on my nails, I have an office job, and they just didn't stay on, and they damaged the nail a little bit every time they came off.

I ended up just looking after my own nails and having a normal manicure.

Buy a buffer and buff away the ridges in front of the telly in the evening. Massage in a cuticle oil afterwards and paint on a good strengthener. I like sally hansen's maximum growth, much better than hardners as it meant I didn't have to worry about breaking them so much as they grew back so quickly and they didn't get worn out and horrid so quickly. Each time I took it off I buffed the nails to keep them smooth. Take a decent multivitamin too.

They are so much easier and cheaper to care for than false nails now and are often longer than my friends with false nails. I have to file them down to keep them from getting too talon like! And I don't look after them half as well now I don't have a wedding to look forward too!

Nails look really nice kept just above the end of your finger and painted for special occasions - try that rather than growing massive nails!

    I've been Money Tipped!
TBH< I never understand anyone wanting false nails! Nice nails I understand, and strong healthy nails, but commiting to something that not only needs expensive maintaining and damages your own nails must be as anti MoneySaving as possible!

Gels completly wreck your nails...I had them for a few years, finally convinced myself and my mum to stop...never would go back!!

I instead spend a little time each day doing my own...much cheaper..and look nicer.. i think!!

OPI Nail Envy does wonders - it's not the cheapest option though. I also like Solar Oil by Creative but I believe almond oil or similar would work almost as well :-)
  • Thats what I am using now, Solar oil to get my nail back to normal.

Had gel nails once for my wedding - had lovely natural nails when all of a sudden the stress must have caused them to break so in desperation had them done. They did look nice but had them removed as soon as got back from honeymoon.

My nails were sooo awful afterwards for ages - very soft and tore easily (they have to file all the glue off your natural nail and was nearly down to the skin (ouch).

My nails are OK now, although confess that I don't look after them as well as I should but do love Solar oil. Smells fab and works wonders!

OPI Axxium gel nails are fab (fairly new in the UK) and don't damage the natural nail as long as they are removed correctly (and not picked off!)

Have had acrylic non-stop for 10 years - always professionally done - and my nails are fine. Don't go in for the WAG talon look though!

Have had the Axxium for the last couple of months and really like it as I prefer dark nails in Winter :D

  • Another vote for Nail Envy here. Myself and mum have rubbish nails and thi is the only thing we've ever tried that actually works. My nails don't split anymore and are growing nicely. :) I tend to buy the 'Twice the Envy' offer from QVC which works out to be v. economical, and use the matte one as a base coat.

    Good luck!
