Hi,
Is meat from the meat counter in say Tesco's any fresher than packaged meat down it's respective aisle? Same question for fish too.
Thanks

Can't comment on Tesco but last week in Morrisons when someone ordered stewing steak on the fresh counter a Butcher went and got one of the joints already on display in the fridges and cut it up for them!0

Morrisons cut and package their own joints, so the package of meat he picked up probably started on his counter anyway.0 -

Last year I trained as a Silver Butcher and Fishmonger at Tescos and can honestly say our Butcher and Fishmonger were really great and I wouldnt hesitate to buy/eat the meat or fish there. They were really hot on checking dates and we had to reduce meat that the date ran out on around midday 25%, 4ish 50% and by 7pm 75%!! after that it was put out to the compactor. If there had been a large order of say sausages we could reduce them early to get rid of them quickly. I guess depending on which store you go to but the one I worked at the Butcher had been there for 13 years, and he had been a butcher for 40 odd years. On the counters we never had anything to do with the packaged meats that was a seperate department. Also I guess every supermarket was similar in that you get checked by Environmental Health quite regularly about once/twice a month in ours and you didnt know when they were coming so legally you had to be quite sure of your dates as they would prosecute you not just tescos!! I tend to still shop there! Hope that answers your question!2010 has got to be better than the last two years!! :rotfl:

I have purchased Waitrose butcher and prepacked pork and i cannot tell the difference, in fact i kind of prefer the prepacked pork as it tells you the cooking time!!:beer:In My 'Permanant' Pre-Masters Gap Year

When my mum used to work in the Co-Op (a good 20 years ago) they used to get all the out of date packaged bacon and meat, take it out of the packaging and sell it as fresh! lolThe quickest way to become a millionaire is start off as a billionaire and go into the airline business.
