Watch out at holiday time for the supermarkets raising prices on essentials !

I've noticed that my local Asda and Tesco had some good and virtual constant deals (though changing brands) on things such as toilet tissue, cleaning products, bin bags and washing liquids and conditioners, particularly washing liquid tabs. Come the run up to Christmas, they dumped all these offers, which because of their longevity were essentially permanent prices and actually raised the prices to higher than they ever were before.

Now call me suspicious (I am !) but I think they are trying to take your eye off these as they tempt you (and you resist) the offers on some food stuffs and seasonal items. By my reckoning, prices are around 33% to 100% more than the previous (permanently discounted) prices.

Be careful out there !

I have noticed every day essentials have creeped up in my local Morrisons. They do have lots of offers, but the milk has gone up 1p per pint, the bread I usually buy has gone up 2p per 400g loaf. And many other things have gone up too.

I did expect some things to go up, because of the VAT increase, but I didn't think you paid VAT on bread, milk and other "essential" foods.

We might not pay VAT on food but VAT is paid on petrol/diesel so the cost of everything else goes up due to extra delivery cost.

Totally agree with the OP though a lot of the normal offers did disappear over Christmas. I just hope they come back.
