Self employment / Business newbie qs

Options
apologies if repetitive or wrong forum!

I've relocated my family to UK in 2003 as my employment shifted to london. My wife had no joy in finding a job. Then she tried door to door beauty therapy service, which started her first day with 3 quid :). Now she is running the same work from home (beauty therapy - eyebrow shaping, facial, waxing etc etc) with very reasonable rates with a customer base of approx 700.

She never had a bank account or NI number since she started her work as she gets cash in hand.

I think we need to run this in a better way by contributing tax, setting up a business or self-employment and VAT registered.

Any ideas welcome or links to websites where to startwith?

many thanks
sunil

If your resident in the UK then she should already have been registered for tax and NI, HMRC can recover any tax and NI that has been due and not been paid.

For info on registering as S/E see here

I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

thanks for this, good starting point!

Initially she tried for registering, but turned down by NI that she need to have a job offer in hand to get appointment!!

For any employment they ask for NI number.

For a bank account she need regular income :(

As a S/E person, she is in employment and eligible for a NI number .

Could she not initially open a joint account with you? And not all bank accounts require you to pay a salary in. Even those that do, if she said she was self-employed and expected to pay in £X per month, they should accept that.

We tried once, but they refused as she was not earning at that time.

Yesterday she rangup NI and got appointment. I guess that's a good start towards self-employment.
