Home cinema system - local suppliers?

Options
DH is looking to replace our knackered home cinema system and needs a new amplifier, speakers and a blu-ray system.

Can anyone recommend a good local supplier staffed with people who know what they are talking about.

We went to richer sounds, they were very helpful and we got our system when it was on offer.

Definitely recommend Richer Sounds. Their site is actually www.richersounds.ie . They are a franchise of the .com chain but still come under the same name. They price match etc so do your homework first, armed with prices etc. And before you ask, I don't work for them, just spend a lot of money on them !!

Whilst Richersounds are a good option, this is a horses for courses area! How much do you want to spend? Richersounds are a budget option (in AV terms, spending a thousand pounds on what you want is really bargain basement level). The other thing about them is that they are a box shifter, they make money on large volumes of what THEY want to sell. RS ie have a somewhat limited range and they have an annoying habit of not having the item in stock if it is not one of their favoured brands or if you ask a price they dont want to sell at. So, there are a couple of approaches. First, if a thousand pounds sounds like a lot, just go in, and take what they give you - you probably wont ever know or care what you are missing! Alternatively you need to do a LOT of homework. Find the reviews, find what is accepted as being good (similarly priced items can perform very differently) and find out what you should pay. Then, you go to RS acting although you know nothing of pricing but fairly set on what you want... at this point, it will likely be in stock since they assume you will buy it at their prices. When boxes are on the table, only then do you tell them the prices they will be matching.

The other option is to go to the likes of Lyric Hifi. This is a real AV establishment and sell the higher end kit. However, I should think that you would need to have something like £2k up for grabs to make this a worthwhile avenue to ignore. Some will say it is a lot of money, but if you know what you are listening and looking for, the little jump up in money pays big rewards.

    Thanks for the information.
DH has decided to buy the Denon 1910 amplifier but we are trying to find some speakers to go with them. We are not AV connoisseurs but do want a reasonably good set of speakers to make the most of the amp.

I'll get DH to visit both Richer Sounds and Lyric over the next few days to try to get more advise.

I don't know how much you want to spend on speakers and it very much depends on whether you are willing to suffer big 'boxy' speakers but the KEF Eggs would be a reasonable match in both performance and price if you want to go for the lifestyle type choice.

You could go for the next 'up' in the range but I think these might be more than you need spend with the amp. The 'Eggs' I have linked to are well regarded and are nice and discrete if you care to make them so.

I found them very expensive compared to Richer Sounds & S&R.

Yes I would guess they are, but its high end gear and they certainly know what they are talking about. At least they did about 10 years ago when I bought some gear there.
