Alternatives to 'vanish'

Trying my hardest to get a load of cacked-in mud out of some sports gear. Just used the last of my Vanish by pre-soaking and then using some in the wash as well, and the mud still has not come out.
Any ideas what I can use instead? Don't want to spend another fiver on Vanish if it's not going to work.
Thanks

Have you got any Stardrops? If so, rub neat into the stain and wash.
Another favourite of mine is that oxy-clean stuff - you get different makes - soak in really hot water in basin for about 30 mins, rinse then wash. Go to one of the pound shops or equivalent to buy this, usually cheaper than supermarkets0 -
