Technika 5.1 Surround Sound in a box £19.97 Tesco

Walking around my local Extra store yesterday, I noticed this 5.1 surround sound set up. I had to check the label 3 times, but it really is that price. An online review says it is as good as a system that costs £250! A nice addition to the new bargain tv's a lot of us have :money:

We got one thrown in as a freebie when I bought my xbox 360, they're not a bad little setup but I'd never replace the surround sound in the lounge with it.

THANKS! Was about to buy, but spotted that it DOES NOT HAVE a DOLBY DIGITAL DECODER IN IT. It's just got connections for 6 input channels - so useless for most people who want TRUE surround sound as there is not digital optical/coax input (your DVD player needs discrete outputs for EACH of the 6 channels).

If sound quality isn't an issue and you're only wanting something better than your TV speakers, you can't really go wrong here I guess.

In a couple of years I'll get a decent surround sound system but with young kids I didn't want wires and speakers all over, so (and this is an alternative to the Technika I'd recommend for similar price) I have a decent pair of 2.1 Logitech computer speakers connected to the TV.

I could be wrong, but I'm sure I've read before about Technika systems causing problems with Freeview set top boxes. Perhaps worth looking into if anybody has a Freeview box.

we've got a freeview box in the bedroom and use this setup (albeit through an amp with built in decoder) and never had an issue!

as said above as well, don't forget this DOESN'T have a decoder, it has 6 phono inputs (Centre/FL/FR/RL/RR/Sub) and subsequent outputs for each channel.

Something like THIS (I know it's an American site, but I'm just giving an example) would be an ideal accompaniment, and having had a quick butchers on a few sites you can pay under £50 for a 5.1 DVD player. £70 for a full 5.1 DVD/Surround setup isn't bad. as said above though, it'd never replace my Wharfdale setup in the lounge :)

  • For £25 it is never going to be fantastic. Ideally in a few months, I want to buy a proper 7.1 set up, but in the short term it should procide some kind of surround sound effect.

Anyhoo, my Technika set is still in the box as my OH can't figure out where all the cables are supposed to go :o
  • Is anyone able to take a photo of the back connection panel on this surround sound set?

I've still got my last 5.1/dts amp (which I upgraded to a 7.1 Hdmi version) . . . could I buy this just for the speakers and hook them up to my spare amp for use in the kids room?

Does anyone know whether I could connect an XBOX to this (I am going to connect the XBOX to a monitor (which does not have speakers) using a VGA HD AV cable and it has the normal VGA (back of monitor) connection, plus the red and white audio cables. I guess it depends whether it has the red and white sockets in the back. Sorry to be so untechnical.

I have a photo of the back. Bear with me and I will try to upload
