Lemonade better than Coca cola?

My bf has sleeping problems, i think it has something to do with the amount of coke he drinks, so i have asked him to try drinking lemonade for awhile to see if that does anything to help him sleep better. Is this a ridiculous theory? i mean i know coke has caffeine in it but is Lemonade really any better for you? any advice please, sorry if this is in the wrong place. :o Thanks for any replies. x

Fruit juice diluted with fizzy water might be better than lemo I suppose. Although none of these drinks will be good for his teeth.

Is the drinking copious amounts just a habit? Can he alternate the fizzy drinks with a glass of water or sugar-free squash. Sugary, caffeine-loaded drinks are not a good habit; nor is drinking loads of drinks containing artificial sweetners.

How about a nice cup of tea to settle him down?!

Yes it can make difference! a can of coke can have more caffiene in then a cup of coffee and then theres the sugar to add to an energy rush.

The best thing to drink is something warm and milk based as there are natural hormones in the milk to make you feel drowsy and then the heat in the milk helps you to also feel drowsy. Try to limit the sugar/honey/flavor in the milk though as it can add to an energy rush (though not as bad as there are proteins in the milk to help even out the additonal sugars) but sugar is also bad for your teeth as it weakens enamel. Ideally you shouldn't brush your teeth straight after either, you should wait for the acid in your saliva (caused by the sugar) to dilute so your teeth are not as at risk and the enamel has had a chance to reharden! Simply put, plain milk is better!!
And there are many varieties to cows milk don't forget! (Soya, rice milk, goats milk, lacto free...etc)

    Hope that helps!
  • :beer:Have him try caffine free diet coke first. It tastes virtually the same and isn't such a big first step. Some people are very sensitive too caffine and artificial sweeteners. For others of us giving up our addiction is more stressful than any benefits.

:eek:My family took great delight in showing me a tip, that coke could be used as toilet cleaner. My own reaction was to point out that this meant more for me. :T

All kidding aside some people are very sensitive to the chemical additives and it is worth trying. Others of us though find absolutely no difference to our sleeping no matter how much caffine we consume. It's a very individual thing.

There are some good free online guides about diagnosing sleep problems. Well worth checking out.

Recently I have realised that I can't sleep if I have drunk coke after about 6.00pm - never used to be a problem.
  • Also, if he is drinking the diet versions of any fizzy drink they will probably contain aspartame which is reported to be very bad stuff.... I have recently discovered it to be one of the two main triggers for my migraines.... I gave up everything with aspartame/sucrolose in it and hey presto, hardly any migraines! (used to get 3-4 a month...now have had 4 in 9 months due to my one other trigger that is much more controllable))

If you google it and go to the 'sweet poison' website there is a list of side effects of aspartame, insomnia is among them.
  • in dental terms -lemonade is no better than cola (and neither is the fruit juice/fizzy water combo either!). The reason is to do with the acid contained in fizzy drinks and fruit juices(so diet options are just as bad) -this erodes tooth enamel, which in turn can cause major dental problems.

non flavoured fizzy water is the best option if he still wants fizzy as the ph isn't too low.
