Emmigration on the basis of running away from UK as the sole objective, will never be successful. As many point out, you cn never outrun yourself. .

House prices are very high in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and some of the newer mining areas. However it is worth noting that you get a lot more house for your money in Australia than in the UK so the average house that you are buying in Australia is likely to be much larger and on a much larger plot of land than in Britain.
!
Why don't they build some smaller cheaper houses for the less well off
it is all well and good having a good sized plot for your $300k but no good if you can't afford the mortgage, or haven't they thought of that yet

Well they used to. Places like Ultimo (v. Central Sydney famous here for being where the ABC is based in NSW) are packed with 2 bed terraces built in the mid-C19th which until perhaps 10 or 15 years ago were considered to be slums (and in some cases still are).
These days 'units' (low rise flats) are increasingly being built in certain areas. They are bitterly resisted by local people. Sydneysiders hate living near appartment blocks (apparently) because it causes a shadow.
London could learn a lot from Sydney (eg open up new blocks of land on the edge of the city on a regular basis) and Sydney from London (you don't all need a 3-4 bed house on a 1/4 acre block to be happy).0
