Best suede protection product?

Having given up trying to find some black flat leather boots I like, I've finally given in and bought suede ones. Terrified of ruining them when it rains though, so I'm looking for a suede protection spray / cream... Has anyone got any recommendations, and are sprays the way to go? The cheaper the better, obviously, but I want it to work and not mark the boots.

These are the boots, if anyone's interested: Dune Moonwalker, £65 (reduced from £130) (but I used £35 vouchers my boss gave me LAST christmas towards them!)

I just use the stuff you can get at Tesco/Sainsburys by Kiwi (I have Uggs) it works fine. Nothing will make suede bullet proof without tampering with the softness in some way (be aware of that!) but the stuff by Kiwi seems fine to me- just need to remember to keep applying every now and then as it does wear off.

Ugg Austrailia also have an expensive version and I'm sure there are many more varieties. Think some shoe meaners will also put a protective coat on suede at a cost.

Thanks jenniewb. Do I need to buy a suede brush as well to apply the Kiwi products?

I bought a cleaner which has a little brush attached to the head of the can which you brush and apply the cleaner at the same time, it works to give a better clean and seems less expensive then separate brushes!

I'd say for you, I'd use a brush. I think my Uggs have a milder sort of suede and don't need to be brushed but your boots look pretty dressy and I'd imagine they'd appreciate a brush! You may be able to get away with a rough sort of cloth to buff them over after cleaning them or just generally once a week but be wary of brushing them too much as if done too much you can cause the leather to become over worn or even shiny in patches. Maybe google cleaning suede clothing and see what comes up? the're may be some specialists you can ask or sites that have ideas you could try.
  • That Kiwi suede protector is fab and if you're worried about over-brushing causing the suede to become shiny, get a wire brush, that should bring up the nap again nicely. Suede shoes and boots are lovely but wet weather is hell on them so get the protector spray on before you wear them in the wet and get tide-marks on those smashing boots

Thanks all - I'll check out Clarks and Sainsburys for the Kiwi one tomorrow and look at brushes too.
