You know those letters..

Well I got one from hsbc saying 'Please do not ignore this letter. If you are having difficulties, please call one of our trained credit advisors (or something like that) on 0870 xxxx xxxxx.

Tip 1

Look for the 'If calling from overseas' number - this will not be an 0870 number, it will be cheaper to call, and will be exactly the same destination

Anyway, I got through to a call centre in India....

They were like... "Mr Maloney.. I see you have never made a late payment before.. You have always been on time.. Can you make a £500 today?"

I'm like... "no"

They said "when can you pay?"

I said "I am expecting some funds - possibly next week"

And she was like "um... okay....um... please make sure you call us next week"

That was very nice of them - I thought they'd be threatening to sue me and stuff

:T

Any of you got advice on dealing with these people. Notice how I used terms like

I may be able to pay next week.

There should be some funds coming into my account etc. etc.

not making any promises (so not lying)

Pleas also note how the op stated "Please make sure you call us next week" so when you get more letters, they can't be held responsible for your failing to make a payment within the 7 days! ;)

Call centres don't care if you are ambiguous, they only care as to whether they have told you you need to make they payment. (Sadly, I work in one - well for the next two weeks, when I finally manage to escape! And I know the sorts of terse arguments managers use to get out of reversing fees for people.)
