I want a lightweight collapsible wheelchair

My uncle is in his 80s and has recently found walking difficult. He lives quite a distance away so my sister and I want to alternate visits every couple of weeks and take him out, just for a meal or shopping. We want to buy a lightweight wheelchair which we can share for the visits, which can fold up and fit in a car boot. I have looked in the shops and they are all about £160 + and even on EBay are about £100. As it is not for daily use but is going to only be used every couple of weeks as a means to get him to and from the car and into a shop this seems quite a bit money. Does anyone know of any organisations which use wheelchairs and sell older models or even a good alternative to EBay? Ideally we were thinking of £30 - £50 but are rapidly thinking this may be a bit low?

Sometimes the Shopmobility schemes sell off second hand ones and some will have noticeboards of second hand ones from people wanting to sell. This will depend on where you live as to where your local scheme is as they are not everywhere and if you do live near one or go shopping near a Shopmobility scheme then it might be cheaper to hire one for a day. Also, try looking in the small ads of your local paper to buy.

The price of £160 is still low for a wheelchair, but second hand ones don't hold their price.

If you have a local branch of Red Cross, they hire out for a donation.

    Thank you

I have just called the Red Cross and they loan a wheelchair for a month at £25 and a weekend at £5. They also get wheelchairs donated which they sell and have taken my name and number and will call back when one comes in.
