Buying a labeler

Happy New Year everyone. Need to buy a hand held labeler and thinking of going for a battery one that I will use rechargeable batteries on.

Does anyone know of a good one I've come across the Brother P-touch 1010 but can't find good info re running costs. I don't want to be in that awful printer position where you've bought a labeler that ties you into more expensive tape than necessary.

Have put this purchase off using all type of homemade alternatives and finally worked out need to be more efficient and get a labeler.

Cheers everyone

I can't see/find what kind of cartridges they take, to be able to work out costs?

I have a Dymo Letra tag, which you can eaily buy all sorts of cartridges for cheaply, but it only does think lables with up to 2 lines of text and you don't get the benefits of extra like the date etc.
I would look for a suitable Dymo product as they do a wide range. :)
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

I have two Brother P-touch 55s (one for home and one for the office) and I really like them. They're both still going strong after 3 years of pretty heavy use. The replacement catridges are pretty easy to find and usually run £3-4.

I decided to go for an SMS style keypad because I figured I already know how to send text messages rather than needing to learn a whole new (tiny) keypad layout. But everyone is different, so you may prefer the 1010's layout.

If you do get the 1010, you'll want to look for TZ type tape (the P-touch 55 uses M type tape) sand make sure that it's laminated and black/white (or whatever your preferred colour combination is). I didn't check once and got red on yellow, which was completely hideous and really hard to read! It looks like the cartridges will be around £6-8 each, which seems a lot but they're usually about 8-10 metres long so it lasts a loooong time!! ;)

Oh, and forgot to say: LabelZone are a good place for research. They're not usually the cheapest option, but they have a really big range so you can usually figure out what you need there and buy it somewhere cheaper!
