Somerfields 2 for

Well I popped in yesterday as didn't need enough to warrant the petrol to Tescos, needed mince, spotted packs of steak mince in the flog offs for half the price so I picked up the 2 I needed. Anyway puts them through the till they were £1.34 each, then it knocked £1.38 off for the 2 for £4 offer.

If I knew that was going to happen I would have got more, shop was just about to close or I would have ran back  So there you go watch out for those in the reduced that are on 2 for or 3 for offers, I got 2 packs of really nice mince for £1.30 :T
One day I might be more organised...........

It works on all the items that are "buy 2 for X". Especially watch for the chickens when they get reduced to £1.98 on the evening of the sell by date. They are on a long term 2 for £5 offer and they normally sell for £3.99 each so the till takes £2.98 off... meaning if you get 2 at the reduced price you get two of them for 98p. Thats 49p each!

This happens accross all supermarkets i believe. The till used to take the total into minus figures sometimes, but they wisened up to that.

I find most of the big stores (Tesco, Asda etc) have cottoned onto this, and reduced items don't trigger the multi-buy reduction. They even have notices which state these multi-buy offers do not apply to reduced items.
Sainsburys seem to be able to override their system. When items are on BOGOF, and then the packs are reduced to say half price, the multi-buy reduction will only take the reduced price off ! BUT, sometimes when they have loads of an item to clear because of the sell-by-date, the original FULL price is removed - the staff even put hand written notices up to say "Buy 2 for 20p (inc BOGOF)":T
At Somerfield this week got some BBQ stuff for the freezer, was £2.99 a pack, or 2 for £5. Reduced to 74p a pack ( don't ask me how they came up with that price !) so 2 cost £1.48, less 98p for the multi-buy offer meant 2 packs cost 50p :D

They half price an item at lunch time on the day of expiry and then if it still hasnt sold by teatime they half it again. Half of £2.99 is £1.49, and then half of that is 74p (always rounding down when faced with a half penny).

Yes I know Sainsburys twigged on this as a family member works there and she was regulary paying for her shopping with reduced bogof items, staff reductions mean they are about 10p each and bogof offer was knocking over £1 off in some cases. I remember her buying 24 jars of coffee for 50p as they were on bogof and usually £5 ish each, got a months shopping for £12
