Exempt from NHS dental payment; still charged--can i get a refund?

Dear all,
Hoping someone can advise me on this.
First of all, i recognise my own mistake in this matter. Whoopsie.
Two years ago, when i was 18 and at uni (full-time, so definitely exempt from dental charges on the NHS) i had to have a filling done. I had a black filling--so didn't go private or anything--and left the surgery afterwards as per normal. I didn't need to pay, so i didn't.
Later that month, my mum told me that i'd got some post from the dentist and opened it for me. It was a letter asking for payment. After telling me i ought to have paid already, my mum paid the bill for me and took the debt out of the money she normally sends me for food.
Obviously, i now know that i shouldn't have been charged (and shouldn't have paid) and i could really, really do with that money back. Can i get it refunded? Failing that, reckon the surgery would give me my next filling on the house? I know that's unlikely... wishful thinking.
Many thanks.

Uni students do not automatically get free treatment. You should have completed an HC1 form to claim exemption .This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Unfortunately you have to claim for refunds within 3 months, so you've missed it I'm afraid.
More details from the HC11 advice leaflet here - http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/HealthCosts/1558.aspx
Specifically pages 50-51
