'Limited or no connectivity'?

Hi

I've just been setting up a Dell desktop for my Mum. It doesn't have wireless on it, so I purchased a wireless dongle from play.com. I have installed that and plugged it in. She has Plusnet broadband, which I can access wirelessly with my laptop just fine, but her desktop is saying it has 'limited or no connectivity'... Does anybody have any ideas how I can fix this or how I might find out what the issue is? Sorry, not very technological at all :o

Thanks

Gwen

Have you tried setting up the driver install disk?

From what you say about your laptop having no problems it is obviously not the hardware, unless you have the wiring set up properly which only leaves the software, or your firewall :)

I put the disk for the wireless USB in the CD drive and followed the instructions, which didn't seem great admittedly.

What router/modem/hub do you have and what dongle did you use?

I don't know the problem specifically but will search for others with issues...

It's the router Mum got with Plusnet, I'll just look it up.

The wireless USB I ordered is an LM Technologies Wi-Fi Wireless 802.11G USB Adaptor - sorry I can't do links, but I got it from play.com.

    Thanks

    It's a Thomson Gateway router.

    Thanks

I cannot find anything specific that could help you sorry (keep ending up with either amazon or a so called help website stuffed with nothing but adverts) but you are probably best going to a dedicated forum such as http://forums.computeractive.co.uk/, it is one of Englands top computer magazines websites and surely they will know what they are talking about :)

    Sorry :/

Are you using Wireless Zero Configuration in order to connect or the wireless USB adaptor software? Which OS are you using? Which Service Pack?

do you have a security passphase that you have to enter to connect to the network?

if yes, then make sure you enter it exactly as seen (eg. the code is CaSe SeNsItIvE, enter it like that then you should be able to connect)
  • you possibly need to set a static IP on the desktop, this is very easy, but it does involve knowing both the router make + model (IP range) and the operating system
