Did you try the easyjet website they do full package flight and hotel, we went last year with them - although I will never go back to Paris it was worth seeing.

I have been to Paris a few times and it all depends on your budget and where you want to stay, if you wish to stay close to the Louvre or Eiffel obviously you are going to pay a premium but if you can handle being a good walk away it gets cheaper, summer costs more than winter though always.

The hotel I usually stay in is the hotel de l'Europe pretty much next to the Gare du Nord, the main train station in geographical terms. All you do is come out of the main exit at the front and walk to the main road 200 yards ahead, turn left on the Rue de Magenta and walk about 30-50 yards.

This here costs about 65-75 euro per room, but with a little more looking by others you can probably knock it down further, but not by much without going to the other end of the scale of 30 euros and one star.

You cannot go wrong with that price and it is among my favourite hotels to stay simply because of the price and easy walking distance to a major landmark that everyone knows, so it is really hard to get lost lol

To get to the Notredame, Louvre and the rest from here simply carry on walking past the hotel and on your right you will come to an undercover market, simply take that main road and keep walking, maybe for about 30-40 minutes which will bring you next to the world famous gothic church, which also happens to be free to get in too, though donations are always appreciated :)

What this website says can be true, I spent about a month last time wandering around Paris and the East and North especially can be dodgy, I would liken it to any city center council estate where there are few shops and fewer people, going North is not recommended, especially in the late hours. South not so much from personal experience, except for immediately out of the train station it is busy enough that you can blend into the crowds and get safety in numbers.

One thing to know about in Paris are the gold ring scammers, the scam will invariably be the same. You will find yourself walking somewhere and someone will "find" a gold ring and ask if it is yours, they hope you say yes and if you do they give it you, to return a minute or two later either alone or with friends to ask for a reward for finding it. If you do get approached you should stay clear if you can. I saw plenty of this and people being taken in by it, one guy also gave 40 euro for what he would later find to be plated lead. I personally got offered over 20 of these by various people which proves the streets of Paris are paved with gold though I found not a single one lol

A friend of mine lives in Paris (she works at the British Embassy) & I'll ask her where the best ones are if you'd like?

Also you mention that you want to do it on the cheap, have you tried couchsurfing?

This is a system where you meet up with people from the city you are in and maybe go for a drink with them and if they like you, you could find yourself offered a place to stay for free, though with 5 people to accomodate it could get a little crowded and harder to find people who will be willing to do it though you may be able to find a group of friends who will each take one person.

You have to be aware of reputation, those with 100+ positives or city ambassadors generally get more requests but they will likely have trusted friends they can point you to :) It is much better than choosing a random name who has just joined, these will also be fully registered with passport details and payment on file so the organisation will know they actually are who they say they are. Like any travel, yu have to be aware of the potential dangers and if you are meeting someone there it is easier to avoid solicitation at the major transport hubs.

A gift is the usual system, either a good bottle of wine at the beginning of the stay and a quick look at their bookcase or dvd collection will give you further ideas.

No one is obligated to put you up but it is a great way to see a city, I did this in Barcelona for a couple of years ago for a week...and she was brilliant, when I find myself back there she will get a huge bouquet of flowers or something.

Have you thought of booking an apartment? Probably a better idea if there are 5 of you as you can buy in a little food and plenty of good french wine and make breakfasts and lunches etc. Depending on size, they probably start from 80 - 100 Euro per night but you could get one that will sleep all five of you.

    Check pm OP.
  • Try tripadvisor.com as well for hotel ideas, I never book anywhere without checking here and sometimes virtualtourist. Depending on your budget try hostelbooking.com they do hostel/hotels or cheap hotels, cross-reference with trip-advisor. I've done this for going to New York and it worked well.
