    hah - i wish!

Still waiting for Knoppix to download using utorrent - tried to use the mirror sites but got nowhere there!

Theres no such think as just a simple take out the laptop harddrive and plug it into the pc is there?

Just a thought, if downloading a Torrent just make sure (if you can) that its from a trusted source, as you dont want any rubbish bundled :)

Just downloaded http://www.ubuntu.com/download and saved it onto the harddrive on this PC as a winrar file.

Then copied that to a cd and put it into the laptop - now what should happen/do I need to do?

I did actually manage to get the laptop to run in safe mode and thought then that I could save all the files I needed - but it wouldn't let me and now once again I can't even manage to get it to run in safe mode.

It still tries to load windows but gets nowhere.

    HELP PLEASE!

Did you burn it as an ISO file? you need to extract the file onto the desktop (easiest place to find it again) and with something like Nero you need to burn it onto a CD as a ISO bootable image.

Then pop in CD restart PC and find your files to copy over or better still connect to the net and upload them to https://www.yousendit.com and then with another PC go back to the you send it link and download your files.

Just post back as it is a little complicated :o

Thanks for the help - much appreciated!

I downloaded the file to the desktop on this PC - its an ISO file as winrar (does that make sense?)
so now I have extracted all the individual files onto the desktop and am now burning them onto a cd to try again in the laptop.

Is this going to work or is a bootable cd different?

I only seem to have nero vision express if that matters!

You cant just copy them over you have to actually burn as a ISO image file, there is some info here http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm

RIght - hopefully I am getting somewhere here.

BUrned the iso files and got the laptop booted up with ubuntu.

    Now what???

Using the browser, I can see the hard drive but if I try to open it i get the message:

unable to mount the selected volume
    error:device /dev/sda2 is not removable
    error: could not execute pmount

can't find them at all - I would have thought that by looking in the hard drive they would have been there somewhere but not that I can see :(

Maybe the drive is completely fried and not registering, If you boot into the Bios, on start up press Del or F2 and see how many bytes the HDD is registering, if 0 is broke.
