I wanna 42" HD television

We need a new TV and have settled on 42" as the optimum size (for gaming and films) whilst still fitting in our living room. My budget is tiny, so the cheaper the better. Can anyone recommend any good deals around at the moment? I've seen a couple at Argos for £400 but one has very poor contrast compared to most and the other doesn't have a PC input, which seems a little outdated to me.

Roughly what I need is something with good picture (resolution/contrast/viewing angle etc), Freeview, 2 scart sockets (for use now) and 2 HDMI (for future), as well as the usual side AV sockets etc. I'd like to have Picture in Picture if poss, but other than that I really don't know what to expect for the money, so any TV-buying advice is also welcome. Thanks.

My mum has just bought this and is very happy with it, has PiP and PaP as well. Presumably this is the one that your worried about with regards to the contrast?
  • No, it's the Hitachi, which has a comparatively low contrast ratio of 1300:1. I've had Bush/Alba before and wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. I broke this promise once a couple of years ago and regretted it, so am sticking to my guns now! ;)

I've been reading the great reviews that Panasonic Viera are getting and would really like to try and get one of those. The 42" is looking rather out of my price range though, unless anyone knows of any great offers? The 32" might be a second choice, but I'll have to go and see one and decide if it would be big enough.

Do you know if that's only in store? Had a look at JL's website yesterday but didn't notice anything affordable. Would definitely welcome a five year warranty though.

I understand if you go into a Panasonic store to buy your TV they will give you a five year warranty, so plan to check that out (and screen sizes/picture quality) in their store today or tomorrow. Don't have a local JL though unfortunately.

Ok guys, the samsung 40 inch le40b530-p7 is on the John Lewis website for £499.99, so i phoned a few of the JL stores, found that southampton, glasgow and one in london had the 40 inch on at £429, my local store then pricematched this(they had it at the full price), bought it on the spot, going to pick it up on wed, they said they dont know when the offer will end, only when they sell their stock of them, top deal and 5 yr warranty! bell the stores they all had at least 10 in stock, southampton on 08456002202, cardiff 02920536000, glagow 01315569121, london 02076297711, goodluck:money:

When it comes to 42" plasmas you only have one choice:-

The Panasonic TX P42X10B (£530 from Amazon)

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-TX-P42X10B-42-inch-Widescreen-Freeview/dp/B001TIMQDQ/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262695835&sr=8-10

£530 might seem expensive, but you're basically getting a £1,000 TV half price.
  • I almost agree with you, but I'd go for the TX-P42S10 - full HD. :D
