hi.. i have 4 old landrover tyres in the garden... that hubby put there a few years ago.... as they were no good for mot.....there are quite big tyres.....we no longer have the landrovers... but we still have these tyres......
any suggestions to what i could use them for in the garden.....i was thinking of using them for potatoes...and adding another tyre every time i earthed up... but wasnt to sure if they would leak any type of chemical or toxin into the potatoes....
plus.. its very hard these days to find someone who would or wants used tyres.....

stack them on top of each other, bolt them together, get a good strong liner and hey presto a nice original planter0
-
sink them into the lawn to create lsmall bedding plant areas, or even shrubs.
I like the planter idea too, as long as you use it all the time, so that kids couldnt climb into it*** Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly ***
If I don't reply to you, I haven't looked back at the thread.....PM me0 -
i have no lawn....on side of my garden is slabs.. with a small raised bed and my 8 x 10 greenhouse....so not much room left there on the otherside of the garden...was a vegi plot... but we used to have big conifers between us and next door .. from the previous owner...and they over shadowed everything... so about 3 months ago we had them chopped down and put a fence up. so now i am trying to get my garden back in order... so maybe some trailing plants that would benefit my veggies or something like that.... thanks for the ideas......Work to live= not live to work0

You can use them for potato growing, I saw an old episode of Gardeners world the other day and they were doing just that.0

My gran used to put them round the bottom of shrubs to protect the base and stop the grass growing in round them.0

Hi,
They look great if you make them into planters! I'm going outside in a minute to finish my second stack of three tyres. I bought three colours of paint (vinyl silk - not very green I'm afraid) and then stacked them on top of each other so it's like a stripy planter. They look really cool!
Okay, the paint cost money but if you have leftovers in the garage it doesn't take much to paint each tyre, but the tyres were free from a local garage - they are happy to get rid of them because they have to pay to dispose of them properly.
I will be putting some flowers in for now until I have read up on vegetable container gardening. I did read a website that said exactly what you mentioned about potatoes and adding a tyre each time you earth up. Apparently they don't leach (or leech?) anything bad into the soil.
I'm pleased with mine and will be doing some more in the coming weeks!
I also got some glass paint and painted paterns on them in matching colours to use as tea light holdres/storm lanterns when we are outside in the evenings. They don't look quite so good, in fact they look like they have been done by a three year old, but I'm sure that someone with a bit more artistic flair could make them look great - I'm pleased as punch with them, even though everyone else in my family is laughing at them!0 -
thanks bunglegirl.....i am glad that you said that they dont leek or give off anything nasty....so i will prob....use them for veggie/fruit growing....as even though i have just got an allotment....i want to grow more in the garden as well...as i am feedup of hearing about what these big companies do to our food.....and the government are letting them get away with it....so every little bit of space i have in my smallish garden with be used growing food....
if i plant some pototoes in them..later on... i wil hopefully have my own new potatoes for christmas.....i will put the tyres near my wall so they should be sheltered. and the thickness of the tyres hopefully will keep some of the cold away from them.....
i like the idea of the stripes...i paint old bake bean tins etc... and plant my lettuce in them..and they are hanging around the place....slugs dont get them then......:rotfl:Work to live= not live to work0 -
I read somwhere (can't remember where as I've googled for tyre planting type stuff so many times) that tyres are really good for growing many things because they keep what is inside warm. They heat up in the day and because they are insulating they keep the heat in.
I'm thinking of trying strawberries in one of my tyre planters but need to read up on what type/when to plant etc.
I want to paint tin cans to grow lettuce in now! My boyfriend is going to go mad :rotfl:
Is there a certain type of lettuce that is suitable for such activities?0 -
Just found a webpage where they are growing potatoes and strawberries in tyres - you need to scroll down to the bottom.

Here is another page with more detaled info on gardening in tyres

If you are ggogling type in tire instead of tyre as that is the american spelling and brings up more results.0 -
thanks for those links...i will have a nose at them later ...when i have my time so to speak....
with the empty bake bean tins you can plant anything in them...i generally use the lettuce mix.. or cut and come again... so i get different colour and texture lettuce.....also ...i just cut a few leaves as and when i want them, so not pulling up a whole lettuce...so they last much longer....but i am a monkey for "grazing" in the garden... i take a lettuce leaf here and some parsley there....so i am allways eating in the garden.....
you could maybe go to a cafe or something, and ask for some of the catering size tins...so you can grow larger things.....
also if you grow house plants etc....and plant them in your painted tins.. they look quite nice....you could also sell them in a market or boot sale....
i better stop now otherwise your other half...will be having words with me....:DWork to live= not live to work0
