But remember this - the 'sale' price today was probably the same price as 2 weeks ago.

All they have done is raise the price for 2 weeks, to be able to put it back down on sale at a 'discount' today.

... and don't start me on the rip-off cables - computer mains cables selling for £20+ that cost them less than 50p, and you can get a real computer shops (like eBuyer) for £1 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/20293

As for the VAT rises - funny how the VAT reduction disappeared so quickly isn't it ?

Last years £499 TV was £488 for a short while, and then quietly went back up to £499 - but tomorrow will be £510

Where is the VAT discount appearing on the till reciepts now ? Only M&S as far as I know are still doing that ...

To show a reduction, the law requires a retailer to offer the higher price for at least 28 consecutive days in the previous 6 months. If they don't, and if like you say raise the price for only 14 days, report them to Trading Standards and they will investigate and if required prosecute.

I don't think it's just Comet at it. I was looking at a tv that I wanted to buy(LG 32LH3000) which was priced at £329. This was 2 days ago. I looked at the price this morning, it had gone up to £379. Sales, eh?

Unless of course they put a disclaimer on the site saying they have not done so.

  • A lot of products on the COMET website stated that the sale price was until 31st December, especially the offers that they had on a couple of Dyson hoovers.

If there is no sale or reduced ticket then it seems it has been taken out of the sale. Nothing morally wrong with a retailer to try a maximise their profit, after all it keeps people in jobs.
Why not try Comet's sister online company Laskys who I think have the fridge you are looking for @ £234.99

I'm afraid I don't find the argument 'it keeps people in jobs' at all convincing. Why not, by that logic, double the price and employ even more?

The wider issue is the deceitful practice of advertising a sale, while continually rearranging prices. It gulls the consumer into believing he is getting a bargain when, in point of fact, he is paying more, not less, than he would have the day before.

Damn, the fridge I wanted to buy from Comet has gone up by £10. Guess I'm back to shopping around then!

Same here. Yesterday I was checking out a hotpoint tumble dryer for £199 in Comet, Currys and Dixons. Today it is £249 in all 3 shops. Tesco Dircet stayed the same at £229 but with £19 delivery = £248 Dhoh!. Going to look at some local stores tomorow.

I have a beko frost free fridge freezer - biggest mistake I ever made, only 18 months old and broken down. Looking at various forums its a common fault on beko frost free's hope that helps with your decision making
  • I bought my telly before the sales began in Currys. They guaranteed the price for 7 days so when the sales began and mt telly reduced by £50 I just went in and they refunded me. I would consider doing this again - a good way of getting in there first.
    1% challenge - £4018 - reduce by 100 payments of £41.
