If you had more time to try it I would recommend either GO or PSP22 which are both made by a company called SIS (Science in Sport) who are the only company who guarentee their products are 100% drug free.
Both drinks are electrolyte replacement/hydration drinks.
Some sports shops stock these goods, if not try a specialist running shop.
As for a home made option, try a bottle of chilled water, a small pinch of salt and the juice of a squeezed lemon.
I have a half marathon on sunday so I will be using PSP22
Good luck with the run0 -
I am sure that is fine, I am not an expert but from experience I use to be into sports quite seriously and I know from direct experience energy drinks should be avoided at all costs!itsbeef wrote:If you had more time to try it I would recommend either GO or PSP22 which are both made by a company called SIS (Science in Sport) who are the only company who guarentee their products are 100% drug free.

What does the lemon do?
The use of electrolyte drinks are purely to maintain hydration levels during exercise. Losing essential minerals such as Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium and Chloride through sweat can have a negative effect on performance
Adding lemon purely takes away the bitterness of the salt. Plus its a natural source of sugar and it acts as an isotonic fluid source.
I know some people dont get on with Sports Drinks pre and during exercise, thus my point about having time to try before an event.....
just my opinion from experience............0 -
From an ease of use point of view, the sachets are easier to use if you're planning on refilling your water bottle in the car or on the road somewhere.
The psp22 bottles are a flipping pain when you're trying to fill a Platypuss from a mountain spring  the powder goes everywhere, turns to syrup and ends up full of dead midges. The High 5 ones taste better in my opinion and the sachets are easier to use when flling your bottle/platy on the move. Also good at neautralizing the taste of iodine if your water has been treated for pureness.
There are different ones for each part of your run. One for before, one for during and one for after; make sure you get the 'during' one.
I don't see why these drinks should be avoided
On a long run/climb, it's essential to keep energy and fluids up while reducing the loss of salt and sugars. Especially when you're racing over a couple of days where glycogen needs to be replaced quickly and effectively throughout a long run.
The SIS GO gel sachets are good if you 'bonk' near the end of your run and are easier than trying to swallow a fun size Mars bar
You can buy the drink powders and gels from Blacks outdoor shops.Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
Its all down to individual taste. Trying drinks out before an event is no different than breaking in a new pair of trainers, it takes time to get used to them.
I agree that the GO GELS are an excellent source of fluid/glucose replacement and they do give you a kick when you need it.
Not tried the HIGH5 stuff but different options work for different people......0
