Essex - Loughton/Epping - places to live

My partner and I are looking to move to this area in July. We have briefly looked at both places. I just wondered if anyone had any recommendations either way. My partner works in central london and needs to commute each day, this is main reason why we are looking at these areas.

I have a 9 yr old son who has SEN and a statement for 18+ hours per week and really need a good mainstream school that caters for his concentration problems. Any help would be appreciated as I would be moving from the North West.

You'll have to check the ofsteds but redbridge gets good reviews ( i believe) Waltham forest- i'm not sure TBH.

I really like Loughton, and we are looking to buy in Chigwell, Woodford, Wanstead, or possibly Leytonstone. I like Loughton best but its jsut too far out for us.

Lived in Leytonstone for a year and really LOVE love love! the area. Of all areas of london its our favourite! We hope to choose wanstead, as its in redbridge, but really not much around - will keep looking!

I can share some of my rightmove finds if your buying :D ( good luck searching for a 3 bed flat with garden if thats what your after- not a lot!) :D

Im Also from the Northwest too
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • Thanks Lynzpower, nice to know there are a few from the North West.

I do like Loughton, it is handy for the forest and countryside which is what I want. I just wondered what the schools were like.
  • Hi - I lived in Buckhurst Hill for a few years which is between Loughton and Woodford on the Central Line. It's a lovely area (the best in that neck of the woods but I am biased!) but it's v expensive.

IMO, Epping and Loughton are both nice areas, as always some parts of Loughton are better than others. Veer more towards the Epping/ Buckhurst hill ends and away from the Debden area. I can also recommend Chigwell, Woodford and even parts of Roding Valley are ok too.

Afraid I can't comment on schools though.

Central line is probably best out of all the lines and seems to be the quickest. Lived in Wanstead, Leyton and Stratford. Cannot go wrong there IMHO

I used to live in Buckhurst hill and we are moving to loughton this summer - can`t wait!
Loughton is really nice and caters for everything, central line, bus services, forest, parks, shopping and general access to places is a `can do`!

Schools are good too, I know of a secondary school that caters very well for SEN - you can check the ofsted reports online and also most schools here have websites to browse and all hold open days or tours via appointment!

    Good luck x
