Long-lasting clothes

Comments

• Hi, I think someone else has mentioned this, but I always wash clothes inside out. This seems to keep them in better condition and they last longer.
I do agree that modern clothes don't seem to be built to last. I often think that is why we buy so many things, because often they look shabby quite quickly, even if the clothes do come from a "good" shop.
To be fair, I have bought the odd cheap item which has washed well, and looked new for ever. I think sometimes it's the luck of the draw!

As well as caring for clothes well, not wearing your smarter clothes around the house helps. Its around the house I end up being less careful, busier. I have house clothes, which are often just clothes no longer smart enough for out of house wear...and ''proper'' clothes.

Dreadful stuff crimplene .... but boy it did last!

I had an assortment of crimpeline dresses made by my mum, all to the same pattern in 70's prints.

It did last.....unless you had a cat!

Bu@@er - should have introduced it to next doors cat! Never thought of that one.....

I think if my mum had made me a series of crimpline dresses in an assortment of 70's prints, I would have had to run away from home. Or kill myself. Or start a fire and burn them all....

Or taken them to the local cats home, by the sound of it!

• hi, just been directed to this thread from Martins money saving tips email.

I thought I was the only one that felt like this about clothes!

I find Oasis jeans last well and also happen to fit me the best, bonus! I need to get mine shortened so I get them altered free as I have their *shudder* account card - worth it for me as I always pay this one off in full and they send me lots of nice 20% off vouchers.

I get on very well with French Connection stuff too (but only in the sale - if you dont mind having off season stuff then it generally goes down to 50% in the sale, have picked up a few things this way.

I appreciate these are at the pricier end of the (mid) market but I prefer to buy less items from here but know that I will love them and wear them to death, than buy cheaper and less well-wearing stuff (is that even a word!)

For basics I find the Sainsburys Tu range surprisingly good - good prices and lasts well and some nice on-trend bits too every now and then. I also get my pyjamas and vesty tops from here as they are really soft and comfy and last /wash really well. I'm not such a fan of the tescos stuff, it doesnt seem to fit me as well.

Thanks for all your responses -its certainly given me a few things to think about. I posted about this because I know from history that people used to pass clothes down from generation to generation - altering their clothes as fashion and size dictated. I wonder what they were made of to last so well? It just wouldn't happen now.
I also have a pair of hand-made leather boots that have lasted twenty years -cost loads when I bought them and have been resoled several times, now relagated to gardening, but are still going strong.
• I have a pair of Joseph trousers (black bootleg) that are 8 years old and look brand new. I thought spending £120 on a pair of black trousers was extravagent at the time but it was money well spent - £15 a year so far and still going!
• I like natural fabrics, but so do moths, many of my wool and even some wool mix or cotton clothes have been attacked!

Try buying some small cedar planks and hanging them in your closet or putting them in your dresser drawers. I do this and have never had moths attack any of my clothing before.

Clarks shoes don't last long at all, I've been wearing their flat ballet pumps one and worn down a pair in a year. I only wear them once/twice a week.

lol they are just flat ballet shoes, these type of footwear are not sturdy shoes.
