Taking sale item back with no recpeit

Hi
Sorry if this is in wrong board.
I bought some things on boxing day, could not try them on as changing room was closed, when i got them home and tried them on they didnt fit.
I want to take them back but have looked everywhere for the receipt and cannot find it. [ I know, i put it in my pocket and it must have falling out]
I paid in cash for the clothes so they will not show up on bank statements.
What can i do and what will the shop do, all the clothes have tags on and i will be returning them to the same store.
Thanks

I think you'll have to tell us which store. Each one has different returns policy.

    it depends
    1. the store does not have to offer refund/exchange on goods that are not faulty
    2. refunds /exchanges are not offered without proof of purchase

but having said that you might come accross a sales person who is feeling generous and will allow you to excchange

Not always true, I can think of a few clothes shops that will give gift cards or exchange at current price without a receipt.
  • Thank you for your advice.
The shop is river island, i appricate that the store does not have to refund or exchange items unless faulty, but as you could not try on the clothes at time of purchase i feel a little leniancy could be used.
I can name the member of staff who served me, what time it was and how much was spent. Will any of that help.
    Thanks

Go back asap, preferably tomorrow before they go into a second round of reductions, and have a try. Be polite, stress the fact the changing rooms were closed, say you were served by Staff X, smile. What have you got to lose after all? I think the best you can hope for is a credit note, not a refund, but still, that's more than they have to give reciept or no reciept.

And if they won't take the things back, leave the tags on and sell them on Ebay?

  • Thank you valk_scot
I am taking them back tom as they were not accepting returns till then.
A credit note would be fine as i do shop in there all the time.
    Thank you again

I used to work in River Island- they are very customer friendly with their refund policy and if you had the reciept it would be a full refund for what you paid no questions asked. But as you don't have the reciept they'll either exchange or give you a credit note to the same value- just as long as what your returning can be resold (ie its not damaged or soiled).

If you really wanted to get a cash refund (as you paid in cash) they may- and probably if they are not busy and have the staff to do this) look back on their CCTV to watch you pay in cash. But thats unlikely at the moment as its so budy in most stores!

    Good luck with it.
  • My sister bought me a top for my birthday from Next (£14) before Christmas. She hasn't got the receipt but all the tags are on it. If it's gone down in the sale will they only exchange for the sale price or will I be able to get something for £14. I would like a smaller size but I doubt they still have it. Thanks
  • I think you'll only get the sale price. I took a £10 gift set back to Tesco but they had gone down to £2 and that's all they would allow me. You can't blame them because without a receipt they don't know if you paid £10 or £2.
