screen gone 'dark'

I moved the laptop from one room to another and the screen has gone 'dark' (like when it's running on battery?). I have it pugged into the mains and it says connected and signal strength excellent, but oddly enough when I removed the power cable the screen brightened. Plugged it back in and it went dark again...have I knocked something, or is there somewhere I click to get it back to normal brightness please?

Have you accidentally pressed the Fn+screen brightness keys (on my laptop F6/F7)?

check your power profile settings in control panel, the keys to press to do it manually vary from laptop to laptop, you need to look for the brightness legend on the keys - Fn and up arrow is quite common.

Indeed, but that is without pressing the Fn key ;)

    As I said: Fn+f6 or f7 .

You can't do much harm pressing buttons, it's not going to resolve on it's own - see power settings in control panel.

Is it a Dell? Mine does the same , the reason is the settings I have put on the mains/battery settings, which the default brightness on the battery is higher than what I set the brightness of the mains. You need to go to the power settings and you can set up. I don't use it that much out of the mains, but when I use battery I have the setting on the processor and graphics lower to increase battery life.

it's an HP pavilion. I've been into power options but can't see what to change, nothing appears to be appropriate. So stupid, all I did was move it from the dining room to the sitting room...
