I don't know about deals but going along the lines of you get what you pay for (which I find anyway) I'd go for a Sony, mine have always lasted well despite drops, water and lots and lots of use. Cannot say the same for Creative which froze within a month. Ipods are good but expensive to use unless your relying soley on your own cd collection/other downloads and don't mind not having any images when you hear the music.
Sonys have mp3s for most price ranges.0 -

I have a Sony and you can down load clips from BBC iPlayer to it0

I had problems with two Creatives, which both emmitted screeching scratchy sounds after about a year. Have an apple shuffle now which I love!0

You do get what you pay for. What's your budget and how do you plan to use the mp3 player? Do you want to watch videos or just listen to music? Are you going to go running with it?
I have an iPod nano, which I bought refurbished (looked brand new) in the States for about half the listed price. I use it with the Nike+ kit. My husband has one of the larger iPods with a hard drive, but you can't go running with it. It's good for him 'cause he's a musician and likes to have 20,000 tracks in his pocket. I don't need that many. The nano suits me fine, and the Nike+ kit is one of life's greatest bargains.
Also, consider investing in some decent headphones. The ones that come with the player probably won't be good enough. I used the iPod ones for less than a day before I decided to upgrade.0 -

Agree with that! You could have the best MP3 going but if the speakers/earphones/sound system is rubbish the music will always sound bad!
Sony do great earphones, Seinheisser (can't spell that!) are also supposed to be good, I have Bose ones and they are great as they have a 2 year warrenty but apparently the dogs ... are Shure earphones.
Apple, Maxwell, JVC and the rest of the cheap brand versions are rubbish- I can vouch for that!
To stop annoying other people with your music, get earphones with silicon covers which help stop the sound travelling outside your ears- and is much appreciated!!0 -
Sennheisers are great and quite well priced.
I had a Creative Zen that lasted over 4 years, 20gb.
Personally I would go for a Sony, very underrated and get more for your money than an Apple.0
