Supermarket vegetables

If you had bought some vegetables - carrots, swede, parsnips etc from a supermarket, how long after their best before date would you use them for?
They look fine (while the celery looks obviously dodgy and off) and I can't help but think they were in the ground in the first place and have been in my fridge since so surely they will be okay.
I am so annoyed that i have not used them and can't help but think if i boiled or roasted them up nice and hot they would be okay, but would they taste any good???
I still use potatoes when new potatoes are growing out of them!!!! but I don't want to ruin other dishes by making them taste of OFF vegetables!!
What do other people do with best before dates/veg???

I grow my own root veg. They don't come with sell-by dates on them, so I'm foreced to use common sense
We sometimes dig the whole crop in the autumn, and use them until spring, I'm sure yours will be useable for several weeks if you keep them in a cool, dark place

i guess it depends on what the veg is for how long it lasts.
I also grow my own and use the feel of the veg as the main clue. (Also sight - if its soft and slimy - bin it!!!!)
Most will do a good few weeks after the dates on the packs0 -
Ok dumb alert here, i never look at dates on veg etc but i keep them in the fridge, should they be kept somewhere dark and cool rather than the fridge?I will save my tesco £1 savings stamps this year! .......so far = £50 (full card#1)
Card #2 £6. I will not be skint at Chistmas this year!
Total £560 -
If it smells and looks fine it will be fine. I've kept many root vegetables for weeks in the fridge after the supermarket has reduced them
If they are a bit soft, just throw them in a soup.0 -

As discussed elsewhere todayIf you have a cool shed, pantry, cellar, etc. you can keep veg in there for free, rather than using and paying for energy to keep a fridge cold

Hi,
I'm with Misskool, I tend to go by how they feel and smell. If the outer layer of a leek is a bit dry, I peel it off and continue. Soft carrots go in a soup or when I make stock.
I wouldn't use a soft vegetable where its the star though. So, I wouldn't serve up soft carrots with a roast, or try to roast up soft sprouty potatoes. There are other dishes where they're better hidden, in my view at least.
Trust your instincts, how it looks, feels and smells is more important than the date on the packet

Penny. xas my fridge is never full, I take it that it is more economical to keep them in there with no detriment to their lifespan as an empty fridge is more uneconomical to run than a full one

The veg would be fine in either fridge or one of the other places. The impact on the veg is none - so if youve room - stick em in the fridge.
A cool/cold dark place is ideal. Unless you leave the fridge door open both places are the same0 -
