I tried cooking turnip/swede before, boiling but it didn't turn yellow
It turns yellow when my mum does it?
I'm doing it again now and it's not going yellow.
Is it because I'm not adding salt? Should I add salt as if I were cooking potatoes.

I remember having confusing conversations about swede/turnip with a friend of mine who came from Aberdeen - what I called a swede, she called a turnip
are you cooking a big orange thing which is a swede? or small round things (think tangerine size) which are turnips?
swede is orange/yellow and stays so when cooked; turnips are white flesh, and I've never known them go yellow when boiled, always stayed white for me.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Turnips and swede are different, turnips are smaller and generally pale/white ,swede are larger tougher and orange.I hail from Yorks where swedes were called turnips????Try swede with carrot boiled together and mashed yum.We grow lots of root veg (on our allotment )and I boil swede, carrot, parsnip and celeriac yum yum!0

Does your Mum cook just swede or does she mix it with carrot-a lot of people do and that makes the mixture a deeper yellow?0

Swede will go darker yellow/orange the longer you boil it - although I do it in the pressure cooker so it doesn`t take so long.
