P45 & Jobseekers

Ok since I have a new job, they require my p45.

I have an old p45 from years ago (7 years) which I swear they sent me a letter after it was issued saying I have a new tax code.

Anyway I've signed off will the jobcenter send me a p45? Or will I have to fill in a P46? I could always give them the old p45 however I'm worried that it will mess stuff up =\

I should think the jobcentre will send you a p45, they sent me one last week. Didn't realise they did that.

  • The old P45 is not acceptable. Use the DWP P45 which WILL be sent to you - or complete a P46 if that does not come through in time (which it might if you have just signed off and you will be paid weekly).

P45 from previous tax years are not acceptable. They can only accept current tax years.

You will get a P45, but it will take some time to come. Meanwhile, just fill in a P46. When you get your P45 from the JC, hand it in immediately to your new employer, so the tax code could be changed.

When filling in the the P46, make sure you select option B in the 'Your present circumstances' section, as you have been on JSA.

Here's a copy of the P46 that you will fill in. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/p46.pdf

While the JC processes your sign-off stuff, and issuing a P45, the employer will give you an emergency tax code for the time being.

I think it will take a few weeks to issue a P45.

Just to add to the above, you will need to take action via your tax office to get them to issue a proper code number to your employer if the JC fails to issue a P45 (which they often do).
